Been laning this weekend in my disco td5, was really pleased to be fair but I've still got the defender itch that I want to scratch.

The car I'm considering is a 90 van td5, in blue 2000 (130k), it's got a few mods, winch, 2" lift kit, rock sliders, mud tyres etc.

Is this a wise idea? I know the older ones are better for wading in deep water, to be honest I don't really want it up the windows anyway. Problem being can't find a half decent 200 that hasn't been bastardised!

Advice please

All depends on what you use the vehicle for. A Defender will not be as comfortable as a Disco. Heaters in Defenders can be an issue, mine is freezing in the winter although some people say their's is as warm as toast. I have a Defender, I did think about changing it for a Disco but couldn't bring myself to part with it. Here in the French countryside the Defender works well. I think if you live in town then a Disco might be better. Horses for courses and all that.

Recently purchased the 110 td5 best vehicle I've ever owned and I've have some amount over the years What sort of money are they looking for it?

Only issue I know about with the 90 is the rear cross member is a bit rotten and one outrigger needs patching or replacing. Just had referb head & gasket

Other than that it's solid & fairly clean

What are the off road capabilities of the td5? Would I be better with say a 200/300? To be honest if had a hunt around and for what I can buy this td5 for won't get me a tidy earlier model, am I missing something?

Tdi more sought after?, Early td5's prices are cheap.
I don't really know why, But possibly to do with the 10p engine problems that can be had.
Although in my opinion most of the problems should have already been ironed out.

Go for it, Nothing wrong with td5's just some people like the simplicity of the tdi (me included) Although I did buy a Very early td5 myself last year for £3750 which seemed too cheap, But brothers got it now and it's been fine.

Out rigger and cross member are not major problems, no different to any other 90, off road the td5 engine and ecu work excellent at low speeds you can take your foot off the loud pedal and the ecu will take over and you can crawl through any obstacle

Im selling my 200tdi and its probably at the top end of the price range for a 200 on a standard chassis. having driven both td5 and 200 I think the main difference is on the road and in the garage. On road the td5 has a little more grunt and a fair bit more if re mapped but in the garage its more complex and expensive to fix, thats electronics for you. Off road I would think either would have more then enough ability for you, a lots based on tyres anyway remember.
