How much of this buttery stuff is acceptable if it's only from condensation? I have a tiny amount hiding in my oil filler cap (not enough to spread half a slice of bread) and most of my driving is only 4 miles to and from work. My dipstick is looks normal.

Hi Mudflap

That's it
Im not talking half a pound just half an individual portion

Does your suspension have time to fully raise by the time you get to work ?

If you really really want to buy that car, take it to a good independent LR repairer and get a pressure and leak-down test done.
However, I stick by my original advice to run away!

Mayo in an engine that is known to be prone to HGF and is very very expensive to repair is too much of a risk in my opinion. There's plenty of Rangies out there to choose from and, if you're patient, you should be able to find a good one.

Great advice and I intent to have an independent LR advisor

Thank's for your help, this thread shows how we all feel about our Range Rovers

Cheers Fred

if you read the guys previous thread you would see my thought, note ! i say thoughts ...............my crystal ball is not as good as the one you guys are using.
we all know to a greater or lesser extent of the rover v8s cooling issue`s but that does not mean that every one is a pending disaster waiting to happen , i would pay to look a bit deeper rather that just assume that the engine is knackered !!!!!!.
and im baseing this on almost 40yrs experiance as a mechanic and offering some of that experiance to try to help the guy.
rick.

I base my answer on experience; I don’t feel the need to place qualifications up to warrant my answer, to you or anybody else. A question was placed I gave my answer it is now up to the chap to read his answers and make a judgement from them. Nowhere did I say the engine was knackered, and you with your 40 years experience would know head gasket does not mean the engine is knackered.

Yes it does. Since I found a leak in one of the airlines now it's up to height before I have backed off the drive. About 4 seconds is all it takes to stop flashing if it's been parked over night.

Personally, I'd be running a mile from any Rover V8 with more than a tiny bit of mayo on the filler cap, and even then I'd be nervous about it.

I'd avoid any car that's only been used for short runs anyway.

Thanks Guy's for your help my wife telephoned the dealer regarding the above car .
The dealer has now sold it and said that LR dealer could only find one fault, a new wiper blade was needed.

That would be apart from the blown headlight bulb and dud battery that he failed to notice.

Onwards and upwards

Another day and another car
