Hi,

I'm not a landrover enthusiast and so have no idea about the engine etc but our freelander has developed a problem and I was hoping someone on here may be able to help give me a rough idea on repair costs (we want to know if it is worth repairing or time to send it to the scrapyard in the sky!).

On a long journey last week the freelander started to lose power during acceleration - it went but took a long time to reach speeds and the drive became quite jerky as fuel was clearly not going into the engine properly. We also had periods of black smoke coming from the exhaust (this was not all the time). We changed the air filter but the problem is still there. It's going to the garage tomorrow to be looked at but we think it might either be the fuel injector or possibly the turbo (if it is the turbo we won't be repairing it!).

It's also due it's mot next month and last year we had two advisories for brake pipes being slightly corroded (the rear main and offside front) and the handvbrake being slightly insecure.

Is anyone on here able to give me a rough idea of what we can expect to pay (at a local garage) for these to be repaired?

so it would be brake pipes, handbrake and fuel injector

We just want an idea so we can decide if it's worth it.

If it helps with info it's a Freelander TD4 ES (51 plate)

Thankyou

Hi there,

a search on your symptoms in the forum will bring up a lot of things to check. my main guess would be to check the rubber hose coming out if the intercooler into the manifold at the front of the engine for a split, this would cause you loss of power and black smoke....a good place to start...

Thnks for that - we've had a look and the pipe is split - I think replacing this should be a job we can manage. Is this likely to be the culprit? Rather than an injector? (it would be a huge weight off our mind if it was that rather than anything else!)

very easy to replace, had it split on underside? they usually rub on a screw on the manifold. Should cure all your probs...unless you have something wrong also but that I can not say unless you come back and let us know :)

Is this likely to be the culprit? QUOTE]
Lack of power and black smoke...means the compressed air from your tubo isnt getting into the engine because of the split. Loss of air compression is liking riding it without a turbo fitted so it will be sluggish...your air sensor (MAF) the engine is getting more air than it actually is so your mixture will be rich giving you the black smoke....
im not a pro - just purely an educated guess from an enthusiast!

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions and info - we're going to buy a hose hopefully today if we can get one - if not we'll order one and hopefully that will cure it! I'll let you know how we get on!

Just to let you know it was the hose, they also found the other hose (to the radiator) was about to go so both replaced and with labour was £75.

They did say they also noticed a knocking sound in the front of the car and the guy did say what it was likely to be but I can't remember what he said - any ideas?

So just the MOT to get through now!

Thanks again everyone for your help

glad your sorted! knocking at front could be driveshafts, steering arms, suspension or engine mounts :0) not as simple to diagnose! when does it knock usually?
