Clunking taking up drive.

I have a bit of a problem and was looking for any advice on what the cause might be.
Upon taking up drive i get a dull clunking from under my defender, I dont know if this is the differentials or the gear box.
I ventured underneath yesterday and there seems an awful lot of play in both the differentials and gearbox is this normal or is this a sign of gearbox/differential faliour ?

iI am hoping this wont be another costly repair as times are hard at the moment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

maybe after comin on ere after doin his time for the ban last week and bein banned again today for life... he is prob thinkin fook it... i may as well have fun...he aint got nowt to lose. :D
