I'd go with everyone that sez UJs but then I'm like that. Check em by wagglin the propshaft an if it moves in any direction without the axle diff end of the UJ moving then it's nertled. It sometimes int as easy to change em as all the people wot write freds about it say, It's the removing of the owld uns that can be a problem but if yer handy then you should be OK. If you int and have a bit of spare dosh then it might be easier to buy new prop shafts with them already fitted.

Like grunt says, could be better to get new props. Check to see if there is any wear in the splines where the two pieces telescope in and out to help with your decision. They were fine on mine when I swapped the ujs on mine but like a total tool I went and cracked the yoke so had to buy a new prop anyway (and I'm used to changing ujs in power shafts!)

i just got paid for a big tree job about a year ago and thought..."i can't be assed to do me ju's" so i called my local 4x4 specialist. he was lucky i was loaded. £26...wait for it...for the part...theres more...ex vat...oh yea baby...plus labour. i mean come on, i know we all gotta earn a crust but gees. probably took them 10 mins too.

i could've bought a nice vice and bolted it to me kitchen table whislt supping on a sweet glass of mackeson stout for that

quit yer moaning as you obviously couldnt be arsed to ask him how much it was gonna cost before he started

i bet most peeps moan about how much it costs to have a tree chopped down, but everyone has to earn a living somehow

Hardy Spicer are gooduns but reckon GKN will be as good along with SKF if they make em an if I remember right they were about 15 quid from a local bearing place a couple of years ago. I wouldn't entertain one from Haddocks.

Hardy Spicer UJ's from Paddocks are £6.50.

Ok thanks for the replies, will get it checked out.

Should have started a poll, didnt realise it was gonna turn into a mega thread ;)

Obviously a common problem

no i did'nt ask him and you know what...your spot on. I'll never not asked a mechanic ever again.

and by the way...£70 (give or take) will be enough for me to hire a groundsmen, with a chainsaw and a brain for a hole day. Not half an hour leaning over a vice with a cup o tea in one hand and a hammer in the other

I however am very expensive:D

your £70 a day man wont have any premisis to rent/heat/maintain

he probably wont have to prepare accounts at the end of each year

he probably didnt supply any parts

when people use the services of a garage they tend to forget that overheads have to be factored into any charges and if anyone runs a business they will know that they are often not insignificant

you are also paying for their expertise, and how do you put a price on that ? - after all if you knew how to do the job maybe YOU would have done it yourself

Aye Grunt, Hardy Spicers are only £6.50. On a point of note, the props and UJ's were originally made by the GKN group, more specifically Dana-Spicer, but some bits of the group GKN sold some of their shares in and Hardy-Spicer was born out of the Australian operations. H-S and GKN are basically the same items...
