If you can't get it out and are worried, punch out an accessible core plug, they are cheap and easy to do.

They are round plugs about 50mm diameter, 3 or 4 along the block under the manifold. You can punch them one side with a hammer and punch/screwdriver and they will release and can be pulled/prised out. This will let the water out.
New ones are cheap and easy to fit.

Just a question though - if i manage to fail at both core plug and drain plug removal, does it matter? Can i still do all the taking off of front casing to sort the tensioner hole and replace p gasket without draining the block?

Yes, you can do all that work without draining the block.
It's very unlikely to be a problem leaving the water in unless we have a severe frost.
The water has anti freeze in it or not?
When the pump is off, pour some neat antifreeze down the hole.

Hey all. Made some decent progress (for me) today getting fan off, cowling out, all hoses off.
Loosed bolts on water pump fine by rigging the serp belt with a clamp to holy tension. But can't loosen PAS pulley bolts as with no teeth on the pulley my belt can't seem to get any grips.
Any tips on how to hold this still so I can loosen?

This is a strap wrench, which you can probably get from Halfords etc..
But, keep trying with your existing belt, emulating the strap wrench - it should work.

Stilsons are good for that sort of thing.
Got both off with homemade strap wrench and perseverance. Maybe a few bleeding knuckles too.
Water pump housing loosened fine. PAS pump bolts are solid as a rock though. I've been chiselling and wd40ing to loosen. No luck so far and light has failed me. Any other tips I'm missing on this or just keep trying. At moment I'm using a 10mm spanner as socket died working on other bits. Clearly crap socket set.

Sounds like you are getting there.
As you have found out, You will need to get a decent socket set, it is a worthwhile investment.
I personally have the Halfords 170 pc set. Which is good for most things. ( plus it has a lifetime guarantee). Then added to as needed. Other suppliers are available adn I am sure if you ask then others will have different preferred suppliers.
But , be aware, the tool bug is very contagious..........

I brought some shock spray, it's meant to cool the bolt down and make it easier to crack off. if the belt is slipping on the pulley clean the belt and pulley you might of soaked it in wd40. Took me hours to get mine free the first time. Once I got two of the bolts out I put in some bolts in which were about 3times longer so I could get a breaker bar between them to hold the pulley in position to crack the last bolt.
Ah the Halfords set is decent is it? I keep hearing bad chat about Halfords but perhaps that's just bluster. Will save me a lot of waiting for online deliveries if I can just pick up from there instead as it's only down the road!

I've only really used it once when I blanked off the egr the bolts were stuck fast and I could feel the head twisting but not cracking it off to come out. Didn't want to sheer it off so brought some shock spray followed the instructions and hey presto.
As for damaging the hole or bolt, every time I have used it I have replaced the bolts for new, half of them look like they haven't been taken off since it left the factory in 1997. The spray evaporates quite quick like brake cleaner so not sure if it leaves much if any residue to damage anything.

Halfords tools are fine.
Some don't like the staff some don't like the service.

I agree with what lots of people say about Halfords and their normal products, unless they are doing a special deal on somethings.
Certainly not somewhere I would go and ask advice for anything mechanical on a LR product. Or to get work done.
But I do like their socket set, So far has not let me down, and as you have already said, their is something to be said for the lifetime warranty especially if you have one near you. When I took a 10mm socket back, which to be fair I had abused way beyond what should be expected and it only cracked the chrome finish, but I took it back anyway, then they replaced with no questions.

Halfords advanced tool sets currently at half price, just had an email, 170 piece is 100 quid i think, mates got 200 piece fantastic starter set, those deals arent on often, see if anyones got a halfords trade card and compare which deal is best
Other than that i get all my stuff from MachineMart, always been super friendly and perfect VFM for a budding tool collection, you can even buy loads of tools at once and pay it monthly now, not for me but theres options
