And as far as the bodge is concerned, see if it'll come out easily. If so, change it because threaded rod isn't usually made from decent steel. Dunno if you've heard of this trick, but put two nuts onto the thread and tighten them up against each other. Then turn both to get the stud moving.

Right. Done that courtesy of Irwin bolt grips and perseverance!

Naismith have re tapped the hole for me so all set to reassemble except...

...I've noticed what looks like an old botch job on the water pump bolts. One (see photo attached) the three long bolts is actually a threaded bar of some kind with a nut on. Now. It's in pretty well and clearly doing the job but can't help but feel I should change it for the real thing while I have all apart. However I don't want to try and find I have more issues if that hole is stripped? Any thoughts?

Also anyone know where i could pick up a paper water pump gasket on a Saturday morning somewhere near brighton? That's the only other thing i need to finish this job!!

Are you talking about the stud with the nut on it in the top LH corner of the photo?????

Cheers

Hi chaps.

Decided to leave the stud for now. Had a go at removing but didn't come easy and figured I'll attack again in the summer when I have more light!

Put it all back together last night and hey presto she works.

Only thing unsure on was the alternator wiring. The non live wire I only had a nut to secure it. No washer and not flanged (think that's the term). Any issue? There's a very minor sound which sound to me like electric but not sure if I've just forgotten what it normally sounds like! Would show you but don't seem to be able to upload video. Here's a photo though.

One thing, cannot see it from your video very clearly.

Have you checked the alternator output?

Have you changed the two bleed screws for brass ones? rather than them being the plastic rubbish which break .

Cheers

Hey all.

I shall now refer to myself as 'slightly clued up ish' instead!

Yes it is that noise. May just be the new alternator warming up? How do I check the output as you say? Is there likely an issue with the connection not being clean if I didn't use a washer on smaller wire?

Didn't change the bungs. Was going to but when I removed the old ones they were very clean and actually seem to some kind of brass plastic hybrid. I have one brass replacement ready for if they do go though.

Didnt end up replacing bung from block either. Another one for the summer. Just want her up and running again!

Have used that Halfords power steering fluid as didn't see the response till after refilling. Label seems to say works for most ATF systems so have to see how it goes. Can always bleed it all again if needed but fingers crossed will be ok.

To check your output from the alternator , just measure the voltage you have on the battery across the terminals when the engine is running using a multimeter.
When running it is normally in the 14V range.
With the new alternator, did it come with the correct pulley fitted? if it did was it spaced correctly so that it runs in the true position for the belt alignment.

Cheers

Okay - i don't have a multimeter. I am literally Halfords favourite person.

New alternator was the Denso original fitted version. Pulley was on from start so should be right...

OK, then should be OK, You should be able to see if it is aligned by eyeballing it anyway.
I take it the "battery" light is work as it should on the dash.

Worth getting a multimeter on your toolbox, a very useful item to have.
Does not need to be an expensive item , £20 will get you one that will do most jobs and be failry robust.

Have you enjoyed fixing your Landy???

Cheers

Battery light comes on yes. Not really sure what it's supposed to do though! Never paid too much attention to it!

Will get a multimeter for the box. Perhaps one for the xmas list so Halfords don't think i am systematically trying to buy up all of their stock.

Have really enjoyed it! Even the frustration but one of the reasons i wanted it was to force myself to learn how to repair and look after it so achieved that goal!

Thanks for all your help ladies and gents.

Yes, it means something is not as it should be.

Hopefully it goes out and all is well.

Cheers
Happy to report that battery light is fine and she drives like a dream. No leaks spotted on the engine thus far and all working as it should.

Thanks very much to you all for your advice. Couldn't have done it without LZ expertise!

A very happy chappy.

Hi chaps

Next task. All running fine but the heater seems to not be blowing much. In fairness, it barely worked before but it blew a bit. It is blowing hot so don't think it's an issue there but just doesn't really blow. More of a wheeze.

I was driving to work the other day and right at the end of the journey just after a bump, it suddenly started blowing hard but then hasn't been since then. So i assume loose connection somewhere. Anyone give me a clue where to start looking?

Cheers

It's going to be somewhere where the wiring is unsupported, otherwise the bump wouldn't have affected it. The only places I can think of are at the switch and between the motor and bulkhead. I vaguely recall that they come through above the passengers knees and along the bulkhead from there - maybe along the dash shelf - are they exposed there?

Best to park somewhere quiet with the fan switched on and follow the wires in those areas, wiggling as you go.

Don't forget that it could also be the switch or if the motor brushes are worn you might be getting 'last legs' symptoms.
