Hi fellas been a while since last posted a question on here but wondered if anyone could help, when I drive the car in the morning it runs and drives great but after switching engine off and leaving for 15 + min and then restarting and driving I get a clicking noise and blackish smoke out the back end,I’ve checked all pipes to make sure no splits as they’re the silicone ones and it happens 80% of the time, put some injector cleaner in in case a sticking injector and getting fed up now as really don’t now what else it can be,if anyone can help I would me most grateful

It's you Fuel burning heater kicking in as its cold weather. How old is the car as if it pre 2006 the auto switch has proberly worn and is kicking in when it's far to warm

Thank you so much for your time and info,iIs it the sensor behind the bumper your calling the switch as I will get one ordered and may I ask how this would cause the clicking and black smoke just so I can understand why this is happening, when you have time to reply, yours most thankfully Karl

Ah missed the black smoke bit, black smoke I think means un burnt fuel so get codes read, change air filter or just service and change all the oils etc if it's still a problem then clean the maf and egr

Where is the smoke coming from? From the exhaust pipe or from under the left side of the front bumper?

Thanks for reply’s guys it’s had a full service last week and I can start the motor up when been stood threw the night or after work and it drives mint but when I drive after work and stop at my sons school to pick him up so it’s been stood for about 15-20 min then when I start it and only when I drive it (ie not stood still and reving) when accelerating away it makes a clicking noise from the engine bay and kicks out black smoke from rear exhaust almost as bad as if there’s a split in a hose but all hoses are silicone and good,it’s a bloody head scratcher as doing my head in :( ho and no fault codes up

I had a clicking noise like that once when stuck in traffic, it got worst over a few days of driving. I put it down to the thin watery rad fluid. I did a complete flush and refill to the correct strength purged all the air out of the system and for 5 years now it's not returned, I think you call that a hydraulic lock or hydraulic hammer

Thanks for reply madmustang the coolant is all good and cooling fine, this clicking comes in at about 2000 rpm when accelerating and progresses with revs and kicks black smoke out With no apparent loss of power, but what I have noticed is when this does happen if I drive really steady for a few miles sometimes it clears itself and drives normal again

Where does the clicking sound come from? Can you locate the component that is actually clicking?

Hi nodge unfortunately can not trace where the sounds coming from or from what component as only happens when driving and accelerating,I can say tho that it sounds like it’s coming from the front right hand side of the engine bay but am aware that sometimes sound can travel

Ah. If it's clicking under load, then I'd suspect something on the drive line, maybe the IRD bearings. It's worth changing the oil, so you can get an idea of its condition.

Thanks nodge will give it a change and look at old oil but only happens sometimes and above 1500 rpm and would expect it to happen all the time

Thanks nodge I’ll do a service on the ird Tomorrow weather permitting as off work, hasn’t been any wind up on transmission thanks to this forum as did regular tests on vcu and did a self recon on vcu due to this site and people giving and sharing there info,a credit to everyone

Service on ird done and still no change, runs a dream but after switching off for 20min or more and then restarting and driving still getting the clicking noise and black smoke out the exhaust and slightly down on power, can’t suss this one out :(

There was a little minute pcs on the plug but nothing major mate
That's a good sign the IRD is in good condition.

Just the other issue to sort now. I've come across the spline in the cross link tube make a cracking sound when it first begins to slip. Maybe it's that, although testing it could be difficult. It might also be worth checking the hub nuts are tight, and the wheel nuts too, and maybe the lower engine tie bar bolts are tight?
