Hello there.

I recently bought myself a disco 1 300tdi and want to clean the engine so I can monitor where any possible leaks are coming from. Usually I have had relatively clean petrol engines, no cleaning was required.

What's the best way to clean an engine without potentially causing unwanted faults? I have seen several methods via YouTube, most of which are pressure hose related. As I don't want any costly repairs to follow a clean any and all useful suggestions would be most appreciated.
 
I know petrol engines are sensitive to water, especially the electrics. Any areas to avoid and do I have the engine running when doing it?
 
Ok, so the rad,header tank and hoses are brand new, but you get the idea.

It's not as if it doesn't see mud either. That engine bay has been the same colour as the wheel arches after some days out.
I'll never use a standard cold water pressure again after using an industrial steam cleaner.

I'm just fortunate to have access to one at work. :D
 
that does look good!

my only piece of advice would be to remove the fan belt. Last time I pressure washed my engine it squealed like a bastard! It'll take you longer to find your 15mm socket than it will to remove belt! :)

It's a direct replacement Allisport jobbie.
Heard of a few standard ones going pop recently and mine was starting to show its age etc, so decided to replace it.

Prevention is better than cure 'n all that. :D
 
Would also like allisport header and PAS tank, am saving pennies :)

Regards cleaning, hot steam is awesome, am so jealous :(

There is a partial workaround though - take the car out for a drive with the fan removed and get the engine really nice and hot, then get back and adjust the throttle to hold 2000rpm to keep it nice and warm, then spray on some water rinse able degreaser, scrub a bit and cold pressure wash, then respray degreaser and pressure wash again.

The heat of the engine REALLY helps to soften the grease, trust me this works :)
