Well iv gone over as much as I can seems doug checked the feeds to and from the wire you shorted so as saint said its looking like ecu they can't be that much second hand as a last ditch attempt, when I had probs IMO I'd rather lose a grand than four so to speak, if you do give up not being nasty sell as parts I might even be intrested in your wheels sorry neo hope you sort it .. X ps if doug has a doner car for testing why can't you send him the ecu to test would save buying one.

SAINT-- you can hear the fuel pump working when cranking and doug did a test where the pump was triggerd from his lap top that buzzed the pump away fine..
we did the plug out while cranking test and no spark at all..

DEFENDER300TDI--The thick brown/green shorted out to the body bracket as pictured ive done continuity tests from the fuse box to becm as the three fuse box ones go direct into car to Ebcm
ive tested tonight all the powers and live to every fuse when i had sanassaks fuse box fitted then i refitted mine and did the same again the are the same all the way through...

DATATEK-- i never had a problem till i shorted the wire on the underside out and the heat mark on blue plug was already there the connection is clean and has been nipped up ive tried wigging the while cranking and it makes no difference

Ok here what i have done tonight its not alot im running out of ideas now

OK... ive ordered an ECU from north wales range rover spares, and oken to Doug, he is sure and convinced that a replacement ecu will be plug and play i cant comment as ive no idea on this subject its out my field however he did say he is happy to resync it if it dont sart up but ive got to get one to try first...

Ive also tested the wiring to the coil packs again i dont know what im looking at to be fair but willing to share the results

Both coil pack connectors have the same readings but i dont understand the results again not my field but they are as follows

3PIN CONNECTOR
pin 1 red wire no live or earth at any point ie key out,key in ign on or cranking

pin 2 white wire 12V live when ignition key turned to ignition on posistion and also still there while cranking engine

Pin 3 blue wire same as pin i no live or earth at any point ie key out,key in ign on or cranking

Both coil packs for each bank read the same readings...pin 2 is the middle wire to each coil pack...

Not sure if that helps but its what ive got....
anyone interested in parts i think it will end up busted for spares so keep in touch ok...

Neo contact doug and ask if your ECM can be checked on this other car is all I can think of now ..

With regards to the rangie if the ECU dont fix i will ethier break it for spare or just sell it as is for scrap....shame as its only just turned 50k miles and the whole car is basically like new inside and out 2 owner full history, janspeed cat back exhausts etc etc...

I also did the following tonight im not sure it will actually prove anthing but when i had sassanach fusebox fitted i took a multi meter and checked every fuse for live and pin in and recorded it down, then i refitted my fuse box and got the same results so i think its not the fusebox to be fair....

seriosly though im not prepaired to just keep chucking £100/£200 parts at it till it starts as it is going to bankrupt me im already into it for best part of £800 worth of work since ive bought it not all this fault mind but ive had it 3 weeks its been stood since 5 das after i got it and ive drove it 21 miles and thats it....

Looking at the circuit for the coils....

Relay 23 is pulled in to provide power to the Coil packs this is done by the BeCM switching the Relay Coil to earth

Power is then delivered to the coil packs via the White Wire (spliced into this wire is another white wire for the second coil pack) a second splice feds a Red wire that is connected to a Capacitor Link then to earth.

From the coils via sheilded cables are the Coil firing cables from the ECU (White/Blue, Pink/Black, Red & Blue) in essence the ECU releases the charge in the Primary Coil to spark the plug. (roughly...)

This switching of the coil by the ECU happens very quickly and will probably only be picked up on a scope....

As you have power to the White wire on ignition on and cranking indicates the BeCM is pulling in relay 23 so there is power to the coils....

The only thing left is the ECU isn't firing the coil pack via the wires coloured above - only problem it will be difficult to tell as I said above a 'scope is the best method to check this switching as it will heppen quickly....each coil fires 8 times per revolution(maths??) due to the 'wasted spark' method (each cylinder fires twice per cycle) so even at a crank speed of 100 revs (which is quite slow!! usually it is much higher) you are looking at measuring a pulse every .2 of a sec or something (don't have a calculator to hand)....

Everything else seems to have power - it turns over, you have dash indications - you have power to the coils - the BeCM is switching the Relay 23 on - only thing left is the ECU isn't firing the coils....

Either this is due to loss of sync or its fryed....

Few things to check -

Check continuity from ECU Coil firing pins (2, 6, 7 & 8) to the coil Plug pins (in the order above) to ensure the wiring from the ECU to the Coils is sound...

My last guess is the ECU is fryed....it is the only thing left following all the power checks to the coils!

Saint...thanks again for your suggestions mate you really know your stuff about these cars plenty more than me anyways trouble is im starting to get out my depth imchecking stuff but not sure what and what it should be if that makes sense, i think its headng towards getting someone in who can systamatically go through it that knows auto electrics and range rovers...

I will try the stuff you mention above Saint and await the ECU coming and see what happens ...

im loosing my faith with this now im not normally defeated but i think this might win this time....

i dont know sassanach ive asked Doug to confirm and see what his thoughts are, ive a new or used good ecu on route now im pritty deflated with this now like... sort of hoped your fuse box would of fixed it to be fair....

SAINT whats a capacitor link look like ???
Relooking at the cicuit diagrams, reading and re-reading things - I think the Capacitor is there purely as a suppressor to stop the firing of the coils from impacting the stereo system....if you remember older cars, you used to get a humming, fuzzing sort of sound that would change with enegine speed - this is the ignition system interfering with the radio....

So I am not sure if the Capacitor holds the secondary coil charge primed ready to fire the primary coil - looks like this is done internally in the coil pack....I did put a question mark after my statement indicating I wasn't sure....

I have tried to find a picture of it in RAVE but nothing, also looked through parts lists and diagrams again nothing - I think it is spliced into the main wiring harness so will be impossible to find!....

But the more I look at the diagrams, the more I think it is just there as a supressor.....

Once you have the replacement ECU - it would be prudent to ensure it is synced with the BeCM, I know Doug said it should be plug and play and I have no reason to doubt him considering his immense talents, but better safe than sorry....

Yeah i will just have to wait and see when it turns up and suck it and see type thing mate...will keep you posted like but im in germany on fri, sat, sun, mon, tuesday at the nurburgring...

Yeah ive got to get away from this blood P38 LOL nah its a cracking weekend away with the lads i go about 6/8 times a ear and get a dozen laps in etc its a great laugh combinied with racing etc keeps me busy to be fair....some real nice exotica get there as well...
