Cheap Snorkel

Anyone got one of these in the link?

At 40quid +VAT are the safari (£200) & Mantec (170ish) any better.

A lot depends on what you want it for. If you mostly use it on road with the occasional green lane, then go for it and let others know after a few months use, what it's like.

However, if you mostly green lane with occasional road use and maybe an occasional Pay 'n play then (I've not used one myself but have seen one, duct taped, on a vehicle) I'd suggest going for stainless or aluminium 2 1/2" + diameter tube and a bit of air inlet (silicone?) tubing to suit and make your own, if you're after cheap.

Whatever you fit,

If you are planning on using it for deep water, then make sure it is sealed correctly as well as the rest of the air inlet pipework and system.

I bought one similar for around the same price for my 200 tdi Defender. Not a very good fit so never fitted it. Its still in my garage, been there for about two years. I wouldn't recommend if you intend it for serious wading.. If its just for cosmetic then might consider it. For serious wading you can't go wrong with Mantec. I had a £60 metal one from Paddocks.didn't look very good but did the job. I have removed it now when I had the Defender resprayed. I don't want to go wading to a depth where you need a snorkel. I also found I get better MPG since I removed it.

Is that a dig at me? I'll have you know my engine carried on working till I turned it off .. just before the water came in over the tops of the side windows!

Actually, no it wasn't ..for a change about your l'ill submarine trip...LOL. ...But now you mention it....

..Why did you turn the engine off, could you not have just driven down the river until you got to an escape point? blub, blub, blub, blub......

It always surprises me how many snorkels are badly fitted, cover the inlet at the top of the snorkel and the engine continues to run .

The bonnet went under water while the rear swung round, floating, in the current, so I kept it running, trying to keep the bonnet pointed upstream, which it did. In fact it was in diff lock low box and I was trying initially to steer to the baks, but it had a rocky bed ot the river and nothing worked, just enough to steer upstream and 'bob' downstream with the flow. Eventually, as the river deepened, the water came to the top of the windscreen and into the top of the side windows which were about an inch down, as usual! The engine was under full flow of water for maybe 200 yards or so ... The Disco sunk into a 'hole' which at the time we estimate was about 12 foot deep .. I just had to leave ..
