Where did it go? When you stripped it were there not two? I sort of wrongly assumed you would have had them both but it would be interesting if it was never there because then it means the head has been off before and it ran fine without it before.

Can you check that bolts from the head don't in fact locate down the collar. Front and back; I think the back certainly has a bolt going down through it.

I am going to look into this when i get home - I am not convinced.

Right here are my findings, I have photos I took of this job when I did it and I have a collar locator on the right side of the engine (looking at it) as you can see circled in yellow.

First off, the oil feed to the head comes up from the triangle holes that run up the left of the cylinders. These feed oil up the head via the rocker shaft pedestals.

You say the oil leaks from the left? Oval yellow circle, when you saw the track of RTV where was it coming from?

The garage that advised you has got it wrong, the hole the collar locates into is a head bolt hole!

I would NOT rebuild this head too soon, because if you get the collar and rebuild I bet it still leaks. The collar is just to locate it, the head gasket it more than capable of sealing the head and block together against water, oil and high pressure combustion.

Do you have the 1st gasket you fitted still?

ITS ALIVE!!! my girl runs again!!! :):):):):):)

1st time ound was definately the slither of RTV that caused the leak!

Upon stripping down the 2nd time round..... biggest school boy error of my life ( so far )
The gasket was on the wrong way round :(:(:( ( oh dear !!) so the oil feed to the rockers was open and therefor ****ing down the side of the block!!!!
Stripped it all down, cleaned and cleaned, Gasket on the correct way round, rebuilt, took some getting the fuel through but she started and sounds better than ever!

The collar I thought was missing was actually located in the head, so I swapped it over and put it into the block in the position shown in your photo DM.

One thing I will ask is when I was priming the fuel and bleeding the system there was fuel leaking from the fuel pump.... seemed to be around the spring underneath the accelerator cable..... now its running there i no signs of any leakage.... why?

All in all my 1st ever HG change, rookie mechanic making rookie mistakes, but I have learnt a hell of a lot and will take the experiences with me :)

I would like to thank Discomania for all his help and support.

Thought I would treat the old girl to a new set of glow plugs.

Old set came out a treat no probs...

New set when screwing them in the top / nut section sheared off the threaded part.

Now I have 3/4 of a glow plug stuck in the head!!!!

Firstly any advice on removing and re-fitting glow plugs?......

Secondly how the hell do I get the broken plug out??

Please advise....

Mike

I hope you don't mind me asking this MikeDISCO, but you clearly state on your first post that all the old glow plugs came out a treat, you then go on to tell us that one or two of the old glow plugs break off, as well as one of the new ones.

Apologies for the mix up, should of read " 1st plug from the old set came out no probs "

Well done mate - wrong way round! Ah well that would do it.

Oh well, we live and learn. Be prepared for the cooling system to appear to get a bit low, it can take a while for these engines waterways to purge all the air.

Before you take it to bits .... the bottom left corner of what is ****ing out oil?

Photo quick ...

You may be OK even yet.

You did torque the head down properly didn't you?

Well this saga continues, went to it this morning after around 4-6 turns she started 1st time, went for a spin to the shop all was good.
Been home about 2 hours went to start her again.... after around 20-30 turns the battery died and she wouldnt start........ any ideas?

I am thinking that i might need a compression test? or a new battery?......

I wonder if the non-starting is related to the fuel leak you mentioned earlier....may be air is getting in..although that wouldn't explain why it started this morning but not two hours later

Had a good look around th fuel pump and all fuel lines and everything looks good no signs of leakage... coulf I have an air lock in the coolant that would cause this??

yes it was turning over normal speed at first then as the battery was dying ti got slower.
Got the charger on it as we speak.

checked stop solenoid cable and it is still connected, any other advice please????

to top it all off me battery charger has given up the ghost!!! just tried to jump it with me Mrs megane, let it charge up for 10 - 15 mins got 8-10 turns out of it then the battery died again....

dam it!, thanks very much for the offer though mate.

Yes please do, last night when I first tried it, It took around 45 mins to get the fuel flowing to the filter and to the injector pipes. once it was there it ran a dream.
as i say went to it this morning started after a few turns as normal really. and now it just wont start, battery is flat as a pancake. .... thanks....if any one else can think of anything please let me know asap......
