Are there any visible or measurable differences between a 1980 2 Door 3,5 V8 chassis and the chassis used for a 1987 4 door 2,4 VM diesel ?
I have recently procured a sample of the former, but can not locate any stamped VIN on the chassis to confirm this.
I have started to suspect I may have been a victime of a fraud, and that the chassis actually come from a 1987 4 doors diesel.
In order to build a case against the seller, I need irrefutable evidence that this is the case, and it can only be related to the chassis as all other compnents can be changed.
Any experts out there who can shed some light on this ?

Don't think they stamped VINs on chassis back then. Think it's a pretty recent thing doing that.

What's the problem with the chassis being replaced?
If the chassis has been replaced with a later one then that's a bonus.
Why go and stir up a load of trouble.

It is not a matter of looking a gift horse in the mouth.

In my country it is a requirement that the VIN is stamped on the cassis, and if the number is missing from its OEM position through being ground off, the ID of the vehicle can not be established and the vehicle looses its registration.
A change of chassis is possible, but has to be recorded and approved by the DVLC and duly noted in the registration papers of the vehicle.
An ad-hoc chassis swap without the proper numbers being recorded will result in the loss of the registration.
Hence the value of the car is reduced to scrap value.
