Hi All.

I want to strip the Chassis back to bare metal. I have tried Nitromorse and it is useless. I have started sanding, however it is very slow and difficult to get at some areas. Some web sites suggest using Brake Fluid. What are your thoughts on this or any other suggestions.

Regards.

Chris.

For situations when chemical stripping is required, I use Paramose:-

http://paramose.com/

Be careful with it - cos it is pretty nasty stuff....

ordinarily though I throw sand at things ... very quickly ;) ( with an airfed mask on to protect me lungs )

That looks good stuff

It is very good :) - but also pretty nasty - dissolves paint of all descriptions on contact, and nitrile gloves too  - and would probably have a good go at my lungs too without a proper mask on :eek::eek: - but, given a proper mask is only about £25 .... then it's a no brainer to me :)

IMHO, most of the "domestic" type products available now have gone the same way - they are so "safe", they are worthless! Nitromors, waxoil ....etc ... Thing is, the proper products are not that much dearer, if at all, so o_O

If it says ‘possible risk of irreversible effects’ or similar on the packaging take it as a cancer risk warning.
Probably not an issue for the occasional user but be careful with it.

I prefer a wire wheel.

I started last night with a Blow Torch and it is doing the job fine. I then sanded the section cleaned with the Torch and it looks great. Rusty but repairable. I am going to carry on that way.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
Best regards.
Chris.

Get a torch with Mapp gas in that case, you'll be surprised how much hotter and quicker things are with it.

I would also suggest the cup brush on an angle grinder. This removes surface rust from pitting which sanding may not reach.

Yes, its a bare chassis. I have removed the loom and left a draw wire. I am also replacing the Shackle Bushes in the Chassis.

flap disc on a grinder?

there are also some discs that look like a scourer, can't remember what they are called, excellent for quickly back to bare metal but they wear out quickly.

I've just purchased this contour tool from frost, haven't tried it out yet but I have seen it being used loads on hoonigan project cars. Not cheap but I have a tractor anda series begging for new paint so it should save a lot of time.
