the chassis on my 300tdi discovery is in good nick - apart from the cross member that is just in front of the fuel tank. This is a square section that is between the large cross member, and the rear one a the back of the chassis.

apparently no repair section available.

trying to work out what this does - does it just hold up the front of the fuel tank - if so i can weld any old bit of steel in, or is it a bit more structural???

thanks

no not the cradle - the square section cross member (goes left to right) welded on to main chassis sections. On mine the cradle runs front to back - with the front bolted onto this cross member.

You mean this bit i have just welded up.

I did see a repair panel somewhere but it was £170 ish and i didn't want to wait for it.

if only my welding was that good...

is this section just a straight box section with a bracket welded on to hold the fuel tank strap?? i cant see because its hinden begind the fuel tank, and once ive taken the tank off i cant go to get another piece of steel.

It also has the seatbelt mounts on it. Also, bear in mind, if you remove the whole piece you will then have access issues to weld the top of it. Is it that badly rusted that it cannot be repaired?

It is about twice as wide at the top, has the bracket for the tank welded to it which also has a couple of rubber rests for the tank to be pressed up against.

I was lucky that the top was all solid or it would have been floor out time. I wouldn’t think yours is any worse than mine as I have had to weld a few places on the chases and you say yours is ok. As long as the top inch or two is solid at the front where access is awkward you should be able to plate it up ok with the tank out but I did have the advantage of being able to use the folding machine at work to make up a repair section.

I can’t take credit for the neat welding as I had some help there from my pall (thanks Crops), where you see some slightly less neat welding that will be mine.
