Hi,

The clutch in my 90 needs replacing but I am getting quotes from around 350-400 to have it done.

I was looking at Beardry89s post which is very useful ( although photos have been removed :( ) and it does not look like a too complex job. How many people have done it themselves? and how hard did you find it and what tools would be needed.

Also does anyone recommend anyone in the Liverpool area or northwest?

Thanks a lot

350/400 sound ok to me.
Diy and you will save at least 200 quid, after a day getting up the cabin floor plates and laying on your back covered in snot/grease/dust and various cuts you may think you 200 quid doesnt sound to much now.

It's quite a straight forward job realy, just labour intensive.
You will need a decent tool kit,& some method of lifting the gearbox/transfer box out & back in again.Either an engine crane,or I use a block & tackle suspended on 2 steel tressels & steel accrow prop.

Take out the pannel under the center seat & transmission tunnel.
Both props off, dissconect wireing & earth straps,& spedo cable.
Exhaust off.
I think thats about it.
Take your time, you'll get to know your truck intimately.
Good luck.
Marc.

I will look into it abit more... Do not mind buying a crane etc.. could do with a garage to store it all tho

I know a guy in Widnes who will only charge about £150+ plus the clutch pm me if you want his number.

Thanks I have messaged you

I found the worst part was getting all the floor panels up, ended up using an angle grinder and replacing the screws with new ones. As has been mentioned the easiest way would be to remove the engine as you don't have to crawl around under it trying to lift the gearbox back in.

I done it by taking the box out but I would Deffo take the engine out instead next time which would be way easier. Agree that if you can get a reasonable quote may be worth saving your knuckles and and effort for other jobs.

If not doing it on a lift with gearbox jacks, removing the engine is far easier. I done it by removing the gearbox on my old 110 as had to change the gearbox after the layshaft bearings failed. My dad's pressure plate failed in his Discovery 2 last year and changed the clutch be removing the engine and it was far easier. Would be even easier again on a Defender or a tdi rather than TD5 really
