Good Afternoon all!

I posted an earlier thread about changing my steering column on my 2015 Discovery 4 as I had play in it. It involved taking off the steering wheel.

Now it says steeling lock on, the lights on the dash go on hear a slight click/whirring noise like it wants to start then just shuts itself down.

I had the live on the battery disconnected whilst doing all this work.

Anyone have any advice?? Please!!

Hi

Is it a manual column or electric and did u change the entire thing plse
Hi there

manual, yes changed the whole thing

I just swapped the old for the new to me part, whilst the positive on the batter was disconnected

No diagnostics

Many thks , that’s less complicated then not being a power steering column , assume u fitted the old steering wheel angle sensor over to the new column

Alas I think in this case ur need diagnostics , particularly for the steering wheel angle sensor as it needs to know what direction ur wheel is pointing

With so many of the newer vehicles all the module vin numbers need to match up , that’s why diagnostics these days are so important

But I’ll double check for u as I think there’s a lock module on these

Just double checked it has a steering column lock module. so that will require programming along with the steering wheel angle sensor with diagnostics if the column u fitted had these already on the new column

Out of curiosity have u tried ur spare key plse

Plus assume you’ve double checked all the connections are plugged in and both batteries are fully charged as yours is a stop start and keyless I believe

And you thought "It's a car, a steering column is a mechanical part, so I'll just swap them over".

If only. :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Alas think the newer cars are even worse that update modules etc over the air , as I think the dealers have to log into there computer in order to send the updating of modules or software over to the vehicle

Suppose to stop theft of parts where they all have to talk with one another via re programming required

Am pleased in once sense mines a 2005 and not one of the newer D4, think the 2014-2016 are called the D4.5 as they were updated once again with extra bits

They also changed the canbus speed which arnt compatible with the earlier D4’s

Indeed the days of swapping parts over without having a good code reader are over for the newer models

All good fun

Yes the steering column lock module will need to be sorted BUT to be honest you have change the wrong part to cure your issue.

It's the lower steering column shaft that causes your problem it's a well know failure item on all d3 d4 sport models.
Iv change mine on my sport an after market item from a site sponsor on a different forum made it worse so I bit the bullet and orderd a geniun item from JLR not cheap but sorted my issue

Refit the original steering column swop out the lower steering column....sorted

Hi mate

Also heard that if fitting a non genuine one it can cause issues , along with ur good self in proving that point

Assume as the canbus speed is different on the 2014-16 D4.5 that parts arnt compatible with the earlier D4’s

Nothing like pulling ur hair out to ensure modules are compatible with one another

plus assume the OP has double checked both batteries to ensure there fully charged

I know right! I’m new to owning an LR and god they’re not easy ha! I’m a mechanical fitter and have worked in cars for years… guess it’s time to buy a gap tool

Both batteries were full charged… my first check ha!

It was off a 15 too so should have worked but god knows, I’ve “fixed” the old one for now as I need it for work Monday.

I’ve done the lower, the play was on the joint between the column and the middle column? If that makes sense?

Anyway “fixed” it for now

All LR products from the TD5, including and onwards, should come with a free diagnostic. More useful nowadays than a spare wheel.

Ooops, "What is one of them???"

Not forgetting a multimeter 🤣
TBH I have used multimeters and other meters made by Gunson for a very long time.
Needed them to do points dwell and to act as a rev counter back in the days when only sports cars or limos had a revcounter!!
Needed a revcounter to do the ignition timing. As well as my "tachostrobe". Never did get an exhaust gas analyser to do the mixture with. They weren't cheap nor were they very accurate. I do have one of those things you put in place of the spark plug to look at the colour of the flame inside the cylinder, again, only worked properly with a car whose carburettor wasn't worn.
And who remembers doing "plug cuts"!!!??? Also a carb balancer. Although some people swore they could do it by ear. With a tube.

I am of course aware that I am talking double dutch to quite a few members on here!
