Has anyone please got a Certificate of Conformity that I could borrow or buy so that I can get my Defender through an IVA ( Individual Vehicle Approval ) test by the DVLA ? It's a short wheel base 300 TDi station wagon that I built myself from parts, some second-hand and some new. The resulting vehicle is 1998 spec and I need to get it tested and registered before I can get it on the road.
Also, could anyone who has a similar model please tell me what the type approval number is on your 90". It can be found on the aluminium VIN plate on top of the pedal box and is the number on the top line on the plate above the VIN. I believe it may begin with the letter 'e'. Oh, and it needs to be a RHD UK spec also. Cheers guys.

Why do you need a CofC ?
Why can you not use your original reg ?
Was the original vehicle subject to a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) order ?

Passing a IVA test will give you type approval to get a Q plate ...

Why do you need a CofC ?

You have to show a CofC when applying to register a vehicle for the first time. I'm in the process of trying to get a first registration from the DVLA.

Why can you not use your original reg ?

There is no original reg for my vehicle as it's built up from parts from all over the place. The chassis is a new galvanised one that I had made so I had to get a new VIN from DVLA for the chassis. To use an original reg, you have to have I think 3 major components from a registered vehicle to start with.

Not sure of that, but the application form for first registration asks for a type approval number.

Where did you get the chassis from?
If this chassis has been used before, then it will have an index already.
Also, the vehicle can be dated from the chassis number if it has been used outside of UK already.

I thought that was the point of the IVA test 'cos you don't have type approval.
Well, I think you are right but I think it's more applicable to kit cars which can be built of all sorts of strange parts.. The way I see it is, if you build a vehicle which is basically the same as a manufacturer has already built hundreds or thousands the same; the manufacturer has already got type approval and so there will be a number which will be common to all those they have built.

I bought the chassis directly from the manufacturer Designa Chassis, so it has no VIN number.

Try and buy a 90 chassis with V5 and go that way.....or it's a 'Q' plate I reckon.
Do you mean, build all my parts onto that chassis ? It would not be legal as I would need that chassis plus the original engine/gear box or axles from the same vehicle. I think it's 3 major components that you must have to retain the vehicles identity.
I would not mind at all having a 'Q' plate (once it's on your vehicle you can't have it changed for a personal plate, you are stuck with it).
I don't really care what is on the reg plate, I'd just be glad to get it registered.

Give them a ring, they're usually very helpful ...

I thought an SVA/IVA also allowed an age related plate if you could prove the age of the bulk of the parts? It's a points system for the identity isn't it, so if you've got 3 major assemblies from the old car that total over X amount of points, then that's it's identity etc.

I visited there once, last year. It's only a small unit on an industrial estate and very secure. No one to greet visitors. A small reception room with a locked door leading into the main building with all sorts of unfriendly notices informing you that you should not be there without an appointment. Also not to ring the bell or knock on the glass for attention. No parking spaces outside. I can't remember if I actually rang them at the time but as you have suggested it I will give that a try. I believe their main business there is establishing the identity of vehicles, so they will be scrutinising serial numbers etc and checking them against the V5.

Agreed. But you have to have the original chassis or an exact copy/pattern replacement. Or the original monocoque body if there's no separate chassis.

Like for like changes are not 'changes', this ruling applies to hybrid type vehicle constructions....
