...time for an x-brake..?

The transmission brake on Scratchy wasn't working at all, so I took it all apart, cleaned out all the crap, dismantled the expander which was jammed solid and cleaned that out too, got some new shoes and springs, fitted 'em (as per Busters piccies, always handy) now I canna get the drum back on.

So I took the expander out to make sure it was all the right way round, and it is. Tried the shoes the other way round and the drum just won't go on.

Seeing as the drum is a bit of a crappy design anyway (just another mud collecting device) I'm thinking of ordering mesel' an x-brake. I was going to wait a while but I'm at the end of me tether here!

Any foughts?

tbh I couldn't get anything to fit on it. I'll go and have another go wiv me molegrips. If that don't work I think I'll be calling x-eng. If it does I'll be ordering my snorkel...

go a buy a £5 adjustable, sounds daft spending £200 on a x brake rather than getting the right tool on the adjuster

how come you didnt remove it at the same time and clean/ lube it 1/2 inch or 13mm spanner fits ,you will need to adjust it first once back together then cable if necessary

If you need more room then 4 bolts and a pin and split pin and back plate off.

If the adjuster is wound fully off, shoes centered- are they ****part make? As it is possible they have too much lining on them.

Didna get round to doing it when I did the expander. And the square jobbie on it is about 8.5mm, none of my spanners will get on it round the flange and it's tapered, needs a special tool. And my local car spares place asn't got one. And it's a three hour round trip to the next closest car shop.

So I phoned x-eng. They offered me free shipping and with a bit more pushing a bit of a discount. So I've gone for the upgrade, it was going to come sooner or later, so I opted for sooner. Tomorrow, in fact...

I could only see no end of problems with the OE brake, especially if I manage any more plains trips wiv WLM... The drum filling up with muddy water, sand abrasing the shoes, the expander getting gummed up with mud. And seeing as the rubber boot was starting to perish, the clips that hold the expander in place had seen better days and I didn't have the right tools to hand I decided to 'splash out'.

Ah... I was looking at the square jobbie that looks like an adjuster on the opposite side to the expander.

Kind of academic now, the whole lot's off awaiting delivery of upgrade tomorrow. Hmmm, new shiny bits to get muddy!

I bought a brand new land rover 1 and it didn't. You can get round it by moving the calliper arm round a bit but you have to be very careful that you don't unscrew the bolt far enough that the spring comes off ! Check the fitting instructions on their website it goes through it.

I'm struggling with this buy bling that mud and **** will affect it's effectiveness v sorting out standard **** cheaply?

If I'm being blunt I have had a well ****ty day

I've had a couple of ****(in the eyes days)ty days trying to get the handbrake working. To add to all the mess it all looked like a gurt mud trap to me, just ready to fill up with muddy water when I (inevitably) get stuck in a muddy puddle (again), which will gunge up the mechanicals again and polish the shoes. I like the look and what folk say about the x-brake (i.e. WLM who I *know* gets proper muddy). I know it's a bit of expense but it should only need doing once.

But now I've got the prop half off and got to wait until tomorrow for the new brake, I've decided to have a go at the UJs. Just read up on getting broke circlips out so I'm off out to attack it with a big hammer!
