One small point. If you haven't done much towing before, give it a try somewhere quiet first. It can be a bit scary to say the least towing a 3500kg load with a 2000kg vehicle if your not used to it.
You tend to get a slight feeling that you are not quite in control.
I do think that getting some professional instruction for towing isn't really a bad idea. I know the towing test these days is a pain but to get a driving license and be able to start dragging heavy trailers around without any instruction is asking for trouble.

Been towing for years had a lwb shogun behind a transit and a p38 hind hind my p38 but im just trying to do things legally as my trailer i have at the min doesnt have a plate on it so dont know what i can really tow.

Couldnt agree more.Even with an able tow vehicle you will be amazed what 3500kgs feels like.the first time you will think the handbrake is on,and thats before you get to a hill.Sorry to be abore but Ishall repeat.Your vehicle must be rated for the MAXIMUMweight the trailer can carry so removing parts fuel etc.makes no difference legally!

:doh:Sorry Steve missed this cos itwas on anew page.I wouldnt think the lwb japthing would weigh any less than a rr would it?You can get homebuilt etc.trailers plated byVOSA(eek!)but it could be can of worms!I tow ifor williams 3500kg flatbed sometimes and 2700kg cattle box hard to beat ifor really.

Are you doing this as a buisness? cos i think you may require a taco only a thought, seem to remember reading it somwhere but can't remember details

Not true - its actual weights, not plated weights, which are used to determine overloading or over the 3500kg towed weight limit.

Cars are exempt from tacho requirements.

Afternoon paul hope yr cows are milking well. What Iwas trying to say is that you shouldnt tow an unladen trailer weighing 1.5t with say a hilux as the laden weight would exceed its rating.I do find this is acomplex area and have been given opposite opinions by different traffic cops.:confused:Interesting to read this thread.Tacos are another can of worms waiting tobe opened

No worries, hopefully I've clarified things a little and its no longer such a can of worms. The laws are complex but they are there, in black and white.

That made an interesting read, ive just found out that some i know has been done for this, he was towing a trailer with a lathe onit with his disco the problem apparently was because it was for his buisness, if it had been private use then he would have been fine, i dunno but going by that link you dont need one (think i'll print it off and keep it in me disco jusy in case plod get all excited about me towing).
On a slightly different note, im a class1 hgv licence holder now if i drive an artic for a job or for reward i need a tacho, but if as i have done drive one for pleasure (must have) NOT FOR HIRE OR REWARD sticker on side of cab i don't need a tacho?? why not? i can kill just as many peeps, cause just as much damage, but can drive as long as i want?
