can I use a rear door spare wheel carrier on my bonnet??

I need to fit the spare wheel to the bonnet - can I use a rear door carrier? mainly for cost £500 for the Land Rover mount kit no thanks !! ....also easy availability. has anyone done this? I can't attach it anywhere else as its a pick up and I need the space in back as I have ordered a tonneau cover. at the moment its strapped to the back under the rear windows so has to move.
so if the answer is yes I can - which one do I buy ?

Im not certain, but I think the rear spare wheel mount sits further away from the door than the bonnet mount does, so may reduce visibility more than a standard mount. I personally would try and fabricate a “standard” bonnet mount.
 
My spare is held by ratchet straps in the rear against the centre bulkhead but then it is a hardtop and I don’t often fill the back. It might be worth keeping an eye on eBay for a bonnet with a spare wheel carrier already fitted, like an ex-MoD one. They do come up from time to time.
 
Sounds like a bad idea to me, I can't see a mount designed for the rear door fitting the bonnet without putting up a fight.
The underside of the bonnet is nothing like the inside of the back door and the standard bonnet mount has reinforcing on the underside.
The standard bonnet mount also has a strengthened prop.

apparently this will not fit my 90 according to the guy I spoke to at "bearmach" - its a pick up cab with a drop down back door, but may have been a van originally as it has holes for the side door hinges. I would go for the back swing carrier if it would fit on easy

I’ve not done it myself or seen it done but I dare say it’s possible. Personally, I’d look at a swing away carrier and a side opening tailgate.

Try and have a look at other trucks with swing away carrier, can not see how this would not work with a side opening tailgate which is an easy mod.

Same as above. You can get swing away designed for drop down tail gates, they hinge out first and then you lower the tail gate rather than being a single unit like the ones designed for a rear door.

Or as stated by others get a second hand bonnet (probably military) will all of the fitting you require as they ar n ot expensive. You will also find the bonnet then comes with all of the relevant reinforcing rather than having to add additional reinforcement to your current bonnet.
 
You can buy the bonnet mount kit for much less than £500. I got a brand new one from PA Blanchard for £206 delivered, that was August this year.
It includes reinforcing brackets for the bonnet frame, and it's easy enough to fit - took me a couple of hours.

There are a couple of swingaway carriers would do the job but the one I recommend is the Pivlock pattern (trade name was the Pivlock, made by Bullivent Engineering but I believe Bearmach market it now), had one on my S111 back in the 1980's and it is still available.
Works in total isolation of the tailgate so even if you convert your tailgate to side-hinged (as I have) it doesn't connect. Locks in the open position so if you are parked on a hill rummaging in the back it doesn't keep trying to close on you. Just bolts to the crossmember-tab and the top of the tub so no weight is added to anything which is likely to wear or sag.

Of course unless you needed to retain the drop-down tailgate there is nothing stopping you converting yours to side-hinged and then adding a conventional swingaway carrier to take the weight, I did this to my 90 20-years ago and it is still working perfectly. All the weight is taken by the crossmember and the tailgate opens & closes in one easy operation.

As above, just buy a n ex-military bonnet, job done. The reason for ex-military and not std converted bonnet is that military bonnets have additional support built into the bonnet frame members, see here
