Great stuff, thanks for that.

Now need to find a heavy breaker bar for the centre bolt, order the parts and we're away i think.

Forgetting sh1tpart, what make belt kit should i be looking for, there seems to be a wide choice and i'm only intending doing this job once.

AFIK i need a belt kit with pulleys, crank o-ring, A/C belt, Fan belt, idler pulley, tension pulley, cranked 36mm fan spanner, timing cover dust seal for crank pulley. Plus the home-brew extractor and some threadlock, i think thats it??

got a bit held up trying to get a disco round the back of my house with no reverse gear. Certainly don't recommend trying to tow one through gravel with an alfa 147!!

I'd make sure you use the correct hex sockets for timing belt case and pulley bolts as they round off easy. All the replacement parts should come as a kit I used craddocks but they weren't the cheapest

Dave

crankshaft locking tool and pump locking pin,.

buy a kit - cheaper in the long run - believe me.

where are ya based, Dave? change yo usercp to show general area.

Dayco timing belt seems to be highly regarded. NOT ****part.

dont forget flywheel lock pin needs to be spring loaded, else it will keep falling out.
ask on the Herts thread - bet one of them has a kit already. save ya time and energy.

Just done my timing belt on my 300tdi, only things i found where I had to replace camshaft oil seal and had to remove camshaft gear and managed to move the camshaft without noticing as you cannot look straight on if you do not remove the radiator for the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and casing. Little tip I found use your mobile phone with camera to take a picture straight on at the camshaft sprocket so you can get the timing marks lined up correct.

Exactly what i was thinking with the mobile phone :D:D technology to the rescue

Also had to make a crankshaft pulley holding tool to tighten the crankshaft nut upto 80nm+90 degrees, I just used the crankshaft pulley puller from my set as a template for the holes and just drilled them out on a 20mm thick piece of steel then cut a 40mm hole in the middle and then welded some bar on the end about a meter long. worked a treat.
