300tdi 1994! Mate says its a chain and won't need changing! I thought belt and I'm not sure now? Any ideas guys? Thanks

Cheers guys! Thought I was going mental! Ill look to get it changed as my old man has Old Times Disease and obviously can't remember when it was done! I'm sure I read 72k to change on a 300tdi. Does that sound about right?

Cheers tetsu0san! Ill be doing just that and digging out the Haynes and spammers in the very near future!

if it's done 72K it maybe still on the original belt, being an early 300 '1994' it may have the earlier crank timing pully. If the crank pulley has not got shoulders on it... change it for one with shoulders.

Time will tell if I have made a mistake but my 1996 tdi has done 340,000 and had a few cam belt changes, and I changed the last one myself but only replaced the belt onto the existing toothed pulleys without shoulders. The belt on it looked like new and had done 100,000 km.

Leads me to think that not all 300tdi have a problem with alignment or whatever it was that made the belts fail with the non shouldered pulleys? Maybe its an unnessary hassle to fit new pulleys with shoulders if you know the cars cam belt service history?

Quite happy to be told Im wrong and all engines should be upgraded, and I actually dont know the cost of new pulleys albeit shipping them to NZ would cost a bit.

Wish it had! Its turned 158k so ill be changing it soon as I can muster the money after the welding bill! Cheers
