Hi all,

We have recently moved from central london to the Styx outside cambridge and as our existing brood of animals is likley to be added to with kids one day, we have decided to give our first 4X4 a try. Not wishing to be stuck in the snow is a big factor as well. I have always been a Land Rover fan (i grew up in the 80s thinking a range rover could comfortably used as a family home) but we are gong for a used Landrover instead. I suspect this is not exciting for most i wondered if anyone had any opinion for us on the price we are about to pay. I know that plenty can go wrong with all cars that you can't account for but in case there are some number crunchers out there....we have found a '03 model, charcoal grey, TD4 Sport ES Premium (it has some very cool looking finned pannels down each flank!..which sealed the deal for the mrs!) with just under 57,000 miles on the clock, 12 months MOT , 2yrs premium autoguard warranty, HPI checked, NO tax and almost no fuel. Managed to get him down from his asking of just over 5k to 4750. Any thoughts from existing landy owners on whether I am getting a good deal? Thanks all and wish us luck!.

The search box up at the top of the page is the best place to start. Try entering "Buying a freelander"
Then nip across to the "Introduce yourself" bit as it will stop you getting a lot of grief from the membership.
Oh and ........Welcome. As long as you are handy with the spanners or have deep pockets for someone else to do the repairs, you'll be fine :)

all cars need up keeping... your just going for one that needs it regularly. That said.. so does my 90. So get stuck in and enjoy.
Oh.. and pop along and say hi in the intro section. Familiarise yourself with the search function.. and you'll find a wealth of knowledge and great members to help you out here and there.

welcome

ooh some more gaylanderers. :)

You seem pretty set on it(i dont really know much about gaylanders to be honest) But just think what you really want to use a land rover for?

If its for chucking a few mammals in the back going across fields then you dont want a Gaylander. If its for taking 5 kids with kit on holiday then you dont want a hard top 90.

You need to be a certain type of person to get out alive on this forum, but behind the banter is a wealth of knowledge.

:welcome2:

Ha! Gaylanderers.. If you had asked me my opinion 6 months ago, I suspect I would have been even less diplomatic! Until we moved from Sheperds Bush a few months ago, the only opinion I had on vehicles is that they should have low profile tyres, a stiff suspension, make a noise like a jet taking off while cornering at well over the speed limit (safety first of course) and the appearance of back seats to be nothing more than an optical illusion. You can imagine how much top speed driving I did in central London when I wasn't climbing a speed hump that rattled my skull. A 4X4 to me was a muddy defender with an open stove as a heater!

Things have to change though and now, thanks to the black magic that my missus has performed, I have found myself in the middle of nowhere (where incidentally 350 ponies might have been fun to drive?!?) where shopping requires articulated help, every 'farm' shop is down a pot-holed path and the animals seem to drag half of the garden around with them.

It was the badge that convinced me (the thought of driving a Jeep or a Rav 4 etc made me suicidal). That and the 2yr warranty.

Give me a little while with the gaylander and let us bed in as a household to the whole 4x4-ish thing and then we can look to upgrade the sexuality of the car ;)

Thanks for the welcome. This forum kept me awake until 3am when I got told off as we didn't even have the car yet. What's remapping and what's a tuning box she asked as she drifted off again....

Is that price from a garage or a private sale? If a garage i would say sounds about right if private I wouldnt pay much more than 4k personally. We sold our facelift HSE freelander 04plate, 70000 miles, 18months ago for 4500 on a private sale.

As much as i hate to admit it on here, even though we had a few problems I loved it and was perfect car for my mrs.

Ok if we're coming clean I suppose I should my wife has one a td4 03 plate and she absolutely loves it.touch wood no major problems and it's kept well serviced by myself which is simple to do and I quite enjoy doing it.obviously I don't drive it I've got a discovery for myself as I couldn't put up with the stick on here.
ITS MY WIFE'S CAR

Never explain

Never apologise

Thanks Fergus. It was a garage so good to know we were there or thereabouts. It's been in the family a couple of days now and I have not been able to enjoy it because I can't get my other half out of the drivers seat! Perhaps if i start sitting in the back giving directions..... Or maybe I will wait until I get the remap done for a little extra poke and then hide the keys

Take a holiday to Wales... then re-think your definition of Cambridgeshire as "out in the sticks" ;)

I appreciate you've moved outside the scary M25 barrier, but, you're still in the comfort of gritted roads and society.

F1... not great in my opinion, but, not a terrible place to start, F2's are good though if you fancy an upgrade but want to keep the "gay, lottery winning, hair dresser" look.

Everyone I've met with a F1 has spent its value again in keeping it working. Which isn't that much I grant you.

There's much better vehicles for kids and animals too.

I am a series Landie diehard.
Looked at getting a Freelander 2 for the Mrs but....... she liked the RAV4 and that is what she got. Tis a load of crap. Figures read 177 horse 400nm torque (295 lb/ft in real money) I have yet to find any shove. Oh and on a 600 mile round trip it did 32 mpg poor for a modern diesel. It is a 35000 mile 2009 job.

Ruddy hell! My Disco 2 TD5 gets around 27mpg and that's 2.25 tonne brick :D

WELCOME to lucyandpaul btw! Good luck with the 4wd Maestro ;)

Coincidence - we have friends called Lucy and Paul who are an item, but they live oop north near us.

depends which parts of cambridgeshire you go to. There are some pretty wierd places....mostly in the fens and definatly out in the sticks!

Oh and pop over to the freelander section and read up on VCU's and tyre choice.

Wrong tyres ruin Viscous Coupling Units. Bad VCU's ruin drivetrain and cost you alot of money.

I'm very happy with the Hippo (aka gaylander aka Freelander) and whilst the 'hard core' Tratter drivers have an opinion on our LR SUV, you will usually find them changing various items of drivetrain/axles/diffs or welding something underneath.

At the end of the day, its each to their own and what you are happy with ;)
