Buying new 110 defender advise.

Good evening.

I am seriously considering the purchase of a new defender 110. However trying to find the best deal for my money is not easy.
Could anyone nudge me in a direction where i may find a good price/deal. Or is it best stick to a main dealer.

looked at some of the suppliers such as jam jar etc. Also puma has issues have you done some research
 
hi ratty, had a filtch round before dropping it back-eeprom com error appears to be pump fault and it is leaking diesel/antifreeze and gear oil.

I think it will turn out to be fuel pump/what I couldn't find on net was if eeprom is wired through edc module or straight to ecu

Depends what you're gonna use it for? the new Defenders are ok if you're using it for commuting/general driving and you want to be able to carry large/heavy loads, but they're not so good at what Landy's are built for! getting dirty/wet/ sideways!

They're too complex ya see, so unless you're a skilled modern mechanic you have to go to a stealer to get it fixed if it goes wrong!

too much elekricery for the home mechanic as i understand it, more complex, 6 gears which are too many in many peoples opinion, ECU which is vulnerable to water, etc etc.

i'm not a great fan of leccy stuff in landies but progress and performance dictates the need for a brain these days - i know 4 people who moved from 300/TD5s to the new one and other than a few minor issues all have nothing but praise for it - these are people who use their landy to earn a living with and do big miles and work them hard

other than some net gossip am yet to be convinced that it's a bad engine, or even the wrong one for a depender - the TDV6 is clearly a better suit but life is never perfect

yea i am not really slagging the engine itself, it clearly is capable off road, i have seen one off road, and with the electrics and computers it does make it very capable.

i am more on about the risk of having an ECU. land rovers are often used as expedition vehicles and so on, i wouldnt want to take a puma on an expedition out in the sticks!

and sure tis a good engine, transits are good vans and have been used for generations, and are proven as reliable and functionable vehicles. so sure the engine will be reliable and functionable.

but i would choose a 200 or 300tdi over the newer ones any day for my applications for my land rovers, present and future! obviously they arent as fast, powerful, versatile, they have less computerised help, etc but their simplicity makes them a better option for me!

I know it's only one owner's point of view, and he does waffle a bit, but there are plenty of examples of people who are much less than happy with their new Defenders, with a lot of stuff going wrong which to be honest, shouldn't on a brand new car. I'm not saying it's a terrible car and not to buy one, just that there ARE issues with its reliability. My friend has a 2008 90 TDCi, which is constantly at the dealers for warranty repairs. He has NEVER taken it off road, and it only sees the lightest of use. I drove this car once, and whilst the extra comfort and relative luxury was nice, it felt nowhere near as solid as my 20 year old 110. My father has a 1985 110 which has served him for over 20 years, and only broken down once, which was an alternator a few weeks ago.

Again, I know these are only the experiences of a few people, but they are reason enough for me to steer clear of this particular model. It seems as though the quality has dipped right down in recent years for the Defender.

Fookinell, it's people like him that give the yaarksheer lot their reputation fer bein miserable bastids!

My Puma is fookin ace. Yes there's been a couple of niggles, but so has there with me Doris's jap mota (Toyota anyone?).

My only real gripe is the fool consumption - 23mpg.

Aye he is a bit grim! But still, it raises a few questions in my mind about reliability. Don't get me wrong I'd love to own a Puma 110, it's probably my dream car right now.

You've nicely misquoted me there. What I mean is that without the reliability issues, it would be my dream car. I just wouldn't want to spend £20k on a vehicle that has a poor reputation for reliability.
