Brakes

Morning All my 2000 td5 auto has a lot of travel on the brake pedal although the brakes work ok, if I pump the pedal once it comes back up as if there's a bit of air in there. So I changed the brake fluid but hasn't made any difference the pads and discs are all ok, anyone got any ideas?

does it splash back in res when pedals pumped ,you need cap off to see, is there any black sludge in bottom of res however little, but if in the end system is good pedal can be improved by lengthening servo/master cylinder push rod ,over adjustment will be noticeable by the brakes slowly coming on after a few miles under adjustment a poor pedal, though in my experience pedal isnt as good as you find with other models

Thanks that was quick, I did clean some black muck in the bottom of the reservoir when I changed the fluid, I will check for splash back later today and let you know the result. I drove another td5 auto yesterday and the pedal seemed much higher and it generally braked better. It may need adjusting then

the black can be a sign master cylinder seals are getting worn that can mean less good pedal but not necessarily getting air in, if you adjust rod ,there should be enough room to hold m/c away without undoing pipes and you will need someone to press pedal fully down whilst rod is adjusted, also rod is only loosely clipped into servo so it will need holding with pliers etc whilst adjusting, if you over adjust it will cause brakes to come on if that happens release vac from servo by pulling on vac pipe where it enters servo

Thanks, there's no splashing back into the reservoir so maybe consider renewing the master cylinder then
