brakes

Hi all my problem is when i start up and drive away my brake pedel goes nearly to the floor and my brakes hardly work but when i stop i can hear what sounds like a pump then when it stops my brakes are all ok , could this be the accumulator or some thing else.. Oh i forgot to mention its a 4.6 1999 year. Thanks.

That does sound like the accumulator is having to work pretty hard to get pressure up. once your pumps stopped running park the car and let it idle, then press the brake peddle and count how many times you can do it before the pump runs again to pressurize...

Im not a expert but good place to start

Hi i did what you mentioned and it took 7 times before it stopped making a whirring/pump noise that sounds like its coming from the accumulator area, well looks like a trip to my landy specialist.

Did you let the pump pressurize first then press the peddle?

I believe its only ment to take 3 or 4 pumps then the pump will run for a short time and so on.

Yep i did that , still the same, although its ok ,no noise if i leave it a few minutes then drive off, its just when its been stood over night then if i start it then drive straight off there is no brakes until about a minute later.

Like I said Im not a brake expert but it sounds like the accumulator is taking its time to pressurize.. when it comes to brakes its always better to have them looked at by someone that knows what they are doing.

Have you read the handbook which says don't drive until the TC lamp is extinguished. This can take up to 40 seconds if the car has been stood for any length of time. After the lamp goes out the pump will continue to run until the accumulator is fully pressurised. If the accumulator load pressure is down or gone it will take a lot longer before the lamp goes out and the pump will run more often. Changing the accumulator is a five minute job.
