Interesting. Did a search for RTC5834 and Island-4x4 came up. The interesting part is that they'd already told me you couldn't get one for the P38. On their site it is for an old Disco.

Looks like Britpart are £20, Lucas £30 and Land Rover £100.

Bit nervous about Britpart and brakes but then I heard someone not so happy about Lucas the other day. Anyone used either (Land Rover one a bit costly!)

Just won an old one off a well known auction site. Will strip it down and see how it works when it arrives. If I can find an RTC5834 we'll be winning!

Only if it's a non ABS vacuum assisted master cylinder on your car. IT DOES NOT FIT ABS MODULATORS. Did you not notice after you searched for RTC5834 where it said LESS ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. That means it's NOT for the ABS modulator. You are going to be very sad, disillusioned and out of pocket if you don't listen.

For christ sake what's the point. Does you car have VACUUM assisted braking or ABS?
 
Yes, just read that on the Britpart website. Non-ABS only. Bugger.

Thought all the P38s had ABS as standard an it was the ETC that was optional?

Bought the one off ebay to strip not fit, although if I can refurb it then that's a bonus. Someone made it so someone should be able to repair it. And if not maybe I'll learn something along the way. No loss there. :)

The P38 is not a BMW product!!

Rover approached BMW for a Diesel engine solution way back in the development days, BMW then bought out Rover in 1994 just before the P38 was due to launch...but BMW had no input into the P38 at design and concept stage.

In the later years when BMW had taken Rover over, they started to introduce their BOSCH Engine Management system to the Petrol models (THOR)

Take a look at the later Classics from 1990 onwards, they were used as test beds for the P38 systems...the use of EAS in 1992 LSE's then from 1993 Vogues....the use of ABS and early Traction control.....the use of a Hydraulic Boost pump for the Braking system rather than the older Vacuum Assisted Servos....etc...all Rover!!

The L322 is a BMW derived Range Rover using a number of E38, E39 and E53 systems and features....when the L322 was being lauched BMW had already sold the brand to Ford, but Ford had nothing to do with the early L322's even though they sold them....from 2005/6 Ford started to introduce their systems and engines, mainly from the Jaguar brand, into the L322 and the BMW systems were phased out.

So there would be little point in looking at BMW parts as they wouldn't be of much use, maybe they used the same manufacturer - Wabco - but I doubt you would find the same master cylinder fitted to either marque!

Cheeky bugger! The p38 is nothing to do with BMW whatsoever other than supplier of the diesel lump. The p38 was the last British Range Rover and the last one with true Land Rover heritage - even if I bought a krautrover or patelrover as a daily driver I'd keep the p38.
 
It was so crap GM later tried to buy it back. Like the imp engine it was too ahead of its time and mechanics didn't understand the requirements for summertime anti corrosion inhibitors in aluminium engines.
Imp engine came from a Coventry Climax fire pump. Good engine let down by the water pump and cooling system. Never a problem in the fire pumps.

Yes the cooling system was marginal - as soon as you got furred up waterways (from lack of antifreeze) they would overheat the airflow through the rear mounted rad also stalled at about 55 mph. The water pumps usually failed because they were stored incorrectly (face down) - yes that's how delicate they were! Such a shame because the Imp engine and transaxle were superb.
