Have the 'ABS light won't go out problem'. Also have the problem that the light will go out but, that then causes a BIG scare;

Now, the light is normally always on & brakes work well but, occasionally it goes out. When this happens there appears to be no pedal movement & there's a terrible grating noise & 'scratchy' feeling in the pedal & no brakes. If I come off the brake & press it straight away there is normal pedal movement & feeling.

I've replaced all 4 callipers, discs & pads & still have the problem. It's bloody frightening when it happens.

Any ideas?

We'll do a one-at-a-time thing...

Have you re-seated your ABS sensors at the wheels?

As I have to go out ...

here goes -
crawl under disco

find sensor (it is a round tube at the top of the hub, not on the brake caliper), it has a black tube coming out from it that holds the wires that go back to the ABS unit under the bonnet.
You should only have two flexible tubey things leaving the brake area... the brake hydraulic line and the ABS wire.

push down on the sensor until it stops moving, next time the disco gets driven, the sensors will be moved to have the proper gap...

Thanks for the replies:). I'm guessing that the mechanics would have had to reseat the connectors when putting everything together so, dodgy wiring sounds about right. Next time it's dry & I'm having a good day I'll have a poke around. Is it a wheel off job?

:)

I'd looked through your post a few weeks ago mate:). What kinda stumped me was the pedal going really hard and the grating feel and what's actually happening at that time.

Thanks for the feedback. Fiddled about with sensors on both front hubs and light went out as it should. Didn't really feel as if they moved much though? However, the no movement of the brake pedal reared its ugly head. Interestingly, when I feathered the pedal it would then brake as normal but, the light came back on. Looks like new sensor(s) needed.
