bonnet query

when or on what model did the bonnet change from the razor ( think thats what its called ) to the more familiar one like on the 90s, as i am looking at getting a S2 and would like an original, not a bitser. have looked at a few time lines but no mention of the bonnet.

the first with the newer bonnet was the stage one v8 i think - stand corrected if i am wrong - so sometime in the early to mid eighties

cant be………stage one was a defender bonnet so full length he means razor edge bonnet and the round nose style one

Wasn't it late 2A's that were the first to have the deluxe bonnet I think its called? The series 3 definitely had them quite early on

I thought it was the name for the plain round fronted ones without a carrier

earliest i can recall is when the late series 2a came out and they started putting the lights in the wings up to this point they were all razor edge bonnets and the bullnose bonnets were considered luxury bonnet type think this was about 1968-69 ish but changed to only fitting the bullnose bonnets when the series 3 was introduced around 1970-71 ish

the fact that it has either a razor or a roundie bonnet bears no resemblance to weather its a bitsa or not as the razor bonnets are absolute buggers for attracting tinworm in the front catch bar and subframe and are famous for it

nope...

the razor edge was fitted to most 88" as standard with or without the option of a spare wheel carrier, even on many 88" station wagons

but on saying that the "deluxe" bonnet could be fitted as an option

109s all got the "deluxe" bonnet as standard, the difference came in when folks wanted to carry a spare on the "deluxe" when they then got a "dished deluxe", the "dish" being due to the bigger 7.50 tyres fitted to a 109" and trying to unblock the drivers vision

so to sum it up, you can fit whatever bonnet you like to an 88" but a 109" would correctly only be fitted with a "deluxe"

hope that helps to reduce your confusion even if not your indecision, personally i'd fit a razor edge to an 88" as it looks "proper"

my series 3 is a 1974 88 and has the razor bonnett on it. Not sure if thats original though.
