hi all--i have a defender 90 200tdi, and was going to change the cambelt--made a spanner to take off the viscus fan--then got to the crankshaft bolt--put it in 5th with handbrake on--braker bar and scafold tube extencion--no dice--i have put it back together for now--this is the prob, i turned the engine backwards--about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn--will this have done any damage (before i start it up) and also wots the best way of getting the bolt off--thanks allen

Turning backwards that much not a problem, the bolt is set very tight get someone on the foot brake while you heave or if feeling brave set the bar against the chassis and give the starter a touch [disconnect injection pump so motor won't start] keep clear of bar when doing this.

There is also a specific tool to lock the crank (about £50 if you feel rich) while you undo the bolt, also used when tightening it. I've got one and it makes life so much easier. Put your location down as someone close may have one you can borrow

And +1 on what kwakerman said. If you're close enough, I would happily offer assistance.

i wouldnt use 5th gear 4ths stronger

thanks lads--given the starter idea a coat of looking at--but i think i will give that one a miss at the mo--impact wrench sounds good--i know where i can get hold of one--but i have seen a aussy idea on ebay, and i am fabin it up t just now (its the one that you give it a clout or 2 with a lump hammer) but i minght have improved on the idea--i have welded a stub 1/2in extencion bar on the buisnes end--so i can get somebody to use a braker bar on it while i give it a batering--well i know wot i mean--taken on board about 5th gear--4th from now on, thanks again al--west wales

Don't forget you need to be able to tighten it securely too. Not sure if the 200 is the same as the 300 but the 300 is 80 Nm torque plus a further 90 degrees and that last 90 degrees is harder than you think..

thanks mr kwakerman, for the warning---the landrover is back together now, i had to do the rad, so it wasnt a wast of time--at the end of august i will attack it again--but this time a little more prepaired---a bloody longer scafold pole at least!!---al

I always get a helper to block the flywheel timing mark through the bell houseing with a screw driver, brakes on (lump of wood wedged between sit and peddle) and in gear wrenching on a breaker bar !
