Bmw x5 transmission diesel

X5's have ZF boxes in some models, not sure about the GM, in both 5hp24 and 6hp26 guises depending on year and model. The problem is that not all those bellhousings have the same bolt pattern as the Td6 which is early/narrow pattern. Later M57 engines have a slightly broader layout and the bellhousing likewise. Sadly the tail of the gearbox is different as well and you will need an adapter. Recommend you check out the FB page for BMW engine conversions if you can, the gearboxes options are often discussed and the suppliers for adapters etc. listed.

Thanks guys,after a bit of digging I found out that the Early x3 x5 both used the gm box with the later x5 beefed up to deal with the torque issue with the 3.0 diesel,also shift components are on the opposite side but has the same ecu multi plug,so I need to do a bit more digging and I will let you know how I get on.cheers

I assume that you’re referring to the 5-speed transmission? The E53 3.0 diesel used the GM 5L40-E up until the beginning of 2003, when the M57N engine was introduced along with the ZF 6HP26 transmission. The 3.0 petrol models used the 5L40-E as well.

Because the L322 and E53 used different transfer boxes the back end of the two transmissions is different (although I guess, potentially, you could swap over the rear casing and output shaft).

A more serious stumbling block though is that the selector lever is on the opposite side (LHS for X5, RHS for L322) so the casing is machined differently. The fluid filler/level plug is also in a different position. Not, therefore, a straight swap I’m afraid.

Thanks phil,I've got a scrap box from an x,5 just to see it seems like a lot of work,but on the up side I think I've found out why my box is slipping 4/5, not enough volts going to tcc solenoid,and 3/4 shift control spring broken so happy days possibly,I will keep you posted,also the gm manual is very handy
