hi all
i have a 03 td4 77000 miles with a blown turbo...does anyone know if any other turbo will fit and iis it a big task to changeone
thanks in advance tony

Unlikely anything else will fit.

I got a re-con unit via ebay from Lithuania, seller called "Nerings" iirc. Perfect service and no complaints from me.

Changing it is a fiddle, but not vastly complex. Haynes suggests removing the IRD box first, but it is -just- possible to do it leaving the IRD in place. Needs small hands and patience.

You do need to find out what caused the turbo to fail in the first place (blocked crankcase filter a main cause) and make sure you clean out the intercooler and pipe work as well, one more thing to be aware of, if it let go big time than it a good chance it will have blocked the Cat as well

Daft question-it's not the intercooler hoses is it? if either of these split (and they do) you get mountains of smoke and the feeling that the engine has fallen out, the power drops so much. They are a bloody sight cheaper and easier to fix as well! There should be no oil on the driver's side of the engine bat under the hose, likewise the short elbow on the passenger side.
Good luck

thanks all for your help and advice will get stuck in this weekend and will take pics ect...
have been looking at some rover 75 turbo`s on ebay and a service kit(rover turbo £35,service kit£28) would be great if it worked out that cheap

will post results..thanks again

When was the crank case breather last changed?
I know a neighbour of mine had whistling prior to the turbo going after not changing it when getting it serviced even though I had told him he needed to do it.

When I first got my td4 the breather was as good as blocked I first noticed it just after the waranty ran out as it does!!! If I let it tickover for a bit then drove off I left a trail of smoke in the mirrors I thought the worst but had some advise to change the crank case filter and that was that cured!!

I have a2003 TDI ,runs great for about 10 miles then loses boost,no smoke etc but loses power and turbo becomes very noisy, when cooled down runs o.k for another 10 miles then does same again.
p.s as a newbie I would like to thank all you guys who do these forums on any cars ,you are a invaluable source of info
