Bizarre swivel/halfshaft problem

After a bit of back and forth with emails Bearmach have confirmed that "Unfortunately our technical team has advised that they believe the unit you have received has been machined incorrectly, and we are now arranging for our stock to be checked." and they're sending a replacement. All's well that ends well. Thanks everyone for your help.
 
Well that’s a result then. Shame it’s cost you time but at least it’s sorted.

Nice result, you would like to think they would include a few tubes of one shot etc.

Luckily I hadn't got around to filling the swivel otherwise that would have been annoying. It would've been nice if they'd sent the replacement by next day delivery though. I've got to wait until Monday which is a bit of a cheek.

Same issue with me in regards to the Bearmarch swivel ball....guess they missed one when they checked their stock. Other ball is made correctly. I'm in Morocco so with COVID, shipping and Customs it will be a few months to this to get this resolved. Off to the salvage yard to get a used one as a stop-gap, don't have high hopes of finding one equal too or better then one I'm replacing. The Chrome shop guy in Casablanca thinks the ball can be stripped down and re-plated. He thinks it had originally been covered with two layers of hard industrial chrome. For the local equivalent of $20 U.S. and a few days he'll work it. I said why not, if it does not work it might make a nice plant pot. He thinks in the end the ball might be a bit larger overall as the hard chrome process they apply is different (??? ok, I'll check that he doesn't just shoot it with silver spray paint :). I suspect the seal will compensate for some larger/thicker sizing. Anybody ever tried re-chroming with any success?
 
If it's going to take that long to get it sorted I'd suggest you just get a local machine shop to correct the faulty swivel. It's only really a case of machining half an inch of material out of the back, and if you've got a correct one to copy they shouldn't have too much trouble. Then once the replacement one arrives you've got a spare!

I've not heard of anyone re-chroming Defender swivels, but I seem to remember hearing about it being done on 101s where the swivels are part of the axle and hence not replaceable, so there's no reason it wouldn't work as long as the bearings still seat correctly. There's definitely enough give in the seal to take up a bit of over-enthusiastic chroming

Another well known member on here (cant remeber who:oops:) had exactly the same issue and he took to it with a dremal :) to get it together.

It was recent and after @Resurgam had the problem.
