best option to replace Freelander1 TD4

Yeh, the DS is sort of what they replaced the Freelander with. But as said, its to big.
How is it too big?

I can't find stats to see if there is a difference in size between the two gen Disco Sports, but the first Gen is built on the JLR D8 platform, which is essentially the Ford EUCD platform that the Freelander 2 uses.

The Disco Sport does have a slightly longer wheelbase, but by 3.5". It is also only about 3.5" longer and wiki says the FL2 is actually 1/2" wider than the Disco Sport.

No matter how you slice it, they are pretty similar sized in terms of footprint.

Some random pics from the internet back up that visually they look similar sized too.

Even compared to a FL1

I'd happily buy the commercial version of Jimny. My FL1 TD4 is the same - two seater, a small van basically. Jimny is what Land Rovers were in history before this luxury thing came a trend. But sure, there are more refined options, if that is what you want.

Yeh, the DS is sort of what they replaced the Freelander with. But as said, its to big, got to many seats and to up market.

We have Merc Sprinters at work that go one step further than the already stupid key dock and do a proximity thing on the key/fob. Its fookin ridiculous, you can't control when the ignition is on and off.
The DS is about the same dimensions as the FL2, and comes in 5 and 7 seat configurations, actually the 5 seater has a much bigger boot. They are too expensive though, and the 2.0L isn't at all reliable from what I've seen, so an early 2.2L would be my choice.

I'm not a fan of keyless stuff, it's all just too silly for me.

Hello all.
For me, I will carry on with my FL1 TD4.
There is nothing out there to replace it!
Its been waxoiled for years and has 134,000 mls on it.
Im no mechanic, but most jobs can be done by a bit of research and an ask on this fantastic forum.

Just wish i could have had it from new.

Cheers

The DS has a wheel base that is 7 inches longer than the F1. It is 8" longer and almost a foot wider than the F1 and weighs 500kg more. Even the fookin wheels are at least 3" bigger .

But its 2" shorter.

So its a big fat short arse of a vehicle compared to a F1. Very different. The DS also costs 78 times the average UK weekly wage, where the D1 cost 58 times the weekly wage at the time.

You could definitely do worse than a good condition FL1. Just look after it and enjoy using it.

Yes, the DS is slightly larger than the FL2 except in height, so it's considerably larger than the FL1. Its clever shap hides its bulk well, but larger and heavier it is.

I thought it was in comparison to the FL2 not the FL1.

As for the width, no way is the FL1 12" narrower.... :D Wiki says 71.2 for the FL1 and 74.6" for the DS. You also seem to be out on the length too.

No matter how you slice it, the DS, FL1 & FL2 footprint wise are all pretty similar.

I was out on the width [I thought that was wrong as I typed it, but didn't double check!] - it is though still quite a bit wider. The length/wheel base difference was correct, as was the additional 1/3rd in weight.

They aren't the same, the DS is at best a gentrification of the F1.

I know most cars have gone the same way, but the DS is into a different market to the F1.

You'll be telling me that the current Defender is aimed squarely at the farmer's utility vehicle market next.

Different market segment I would agree, the DS is more 'premium'. But on the length, you said 8" wiki says about 5-5.5" which makes the DS only 3% longer, which is hardly anything.

Wiki also says 1744-1839kg for the DS, a quick Google says 1427-1562 for a Freelander 1. So you are also way off on the weight too, like for like engines is about 300kg.
