BECM - prophylactic

This follows on from the big one (Rob's cheesed off thread).

Are there any proven ways off water/moisture proofing the BECM?

I think mine is going to get very nervous when it sees the size of the jar of Vaseline and huge syringe of silicone sealant coming its way.

Are there better ways?

I've considered relacquering the boards in mine. Along with a couple of packs of dessicant. Keeping your car water tight helps and working airconditioning tends to keep stuff dry as it is a dehumidifier. Sealing boxes subject to temperature variations is a good way of wrecking it with condensation. I don't know how feasible it would be to fit a small computer type fan to the case as well just to keep air circulating.

Several p38 owners on Rangerovers.net have tried using sealant to waterproof the BECM.
It was reported that they all overheated leading to component failure. Don't know of any that were successful.

Sealing them tight would cause condensation and overheating issues as mentioned, surely sealing them but having two tubes, one which vents to atmosphere (above "flood" height) and one that blows cabin air into the box (via a 12 volt "PC" fan) will aid cooling and keep the electronics reasonably dry?

The cases are vented - for a reason.

It's easy enough to move the ECM.

I think the weak point is the fuse holder part at the front.

That Liquipel treatment looks interesting. Anyone want to be the guinea pig?

I saw it the telly with Richard Hammond phone dropped into the bog fully submerged no problem , don't know what the cost would be , bet they don't do it on new cars there lose to much won't they ? Bit like not fitting stainless where needed .

Why not use the stuff used in PCB manufacturing? If its good enuff for the military.....

Look for conformal coating on CPC | CPC - Over 100, 000 products from one of the worlds leading distributors of electronic and related products. It won't make it submergable though

Thanks looks good for a£10 have you used it strip and spray everything ? Except connectors ?? Looks like a summer job comming

It's not possible to waterproof the connectors so you can never make it truly waterproof. The only way would be to put the whole lot in a waterproof box with forced air cooling maintaining positive pressure in the box and watertight cable glands.

Sorry I ment have you used it? Would you strip it and spray every where of just c boards , and do you spray connectors or not a good idear?

I use it on the boards I manufacture to go in yachts. The BECM boards are already coated, you cannot use it on connectors.
Personally, unless the board shows signs of the coating lifting or corrosion on the tracks, I would leave well alone. It's hard to ensure coating under the I.C's and a light coating is all that's necessary, don't flood it.

Personally, I wouldn't touch them at all.

If your car is working ok, leave the becm well alone!

Never take it apart for preventive measures as it will come back & bite your arse.
