This popped up on my FB, I thought it would interest you ...

How do you feel about 4x4s in the fells?
There are calls to start a public consultation on banning them from a popular route from Tilberthwaite to Little Langdale and High Oxenfell to Hodge Close.
The tenants at Tilberthwaite Farm say over the last 10 –15 years traffic's grown with sometimes as many as 30 4x4s in a day making it difficult to farm.
The LDNPA says it will assess the route for damage but since few people have raised the issue, it does not consider there's justification to pursue a vehicle ban.
There are 65 unsealed public roads where it is legal to drive in the national park. Recreational motor vehicles have access to 125 kilometres in all compared to the 3,200km of paths walkers can use.

Many of the comments note that users help and finance repairs, so it may just be something to keep an eye on ... Good Luck to those who know the area ...

Seems to me from the sign on the gate, that they may have more of an issue with loose dogs in the farmyard.

To be fair if you had that number of vehicles driving though your place a day it might just pee you off a little.

Lived on one for years but it was never used. It passed through three farm yards on our side of the valley and over some very soft fields. I think just one trying it out would have made a horrible mess. It just stayed a secret thankfully. Good shortcut from Crawshaw Booth to Lumb though.
Damn, did I say that out loud.

Forgot, just been reminded on Facebook .. This is the lane that Glass and others paid a lot of money to help fix a couple of walls, or a wall, a few years ago. That wasn't down to 4x4's, mostly natural erosion, as I suspect, this is ... Just 'cos the Local Authority say they don't have the money for such repairs to Byways ...

I suspect they'll find the magic money tree when they themselves need a wage increase or a new drain put in near the council offices ...

Deffo seems to be a case of someone using it as a chance to beat the 4x4 crowd.

If they cannot get a tractor or quad up there then I would love to know how a road legal 4x4 is doing it. let alone 30 of them.

Sounds daft, but their estimate of 30+ vehicles a day may not be as stupid as they say. There's a local 4x4 tour company goes out every day with at least 10 vehicles, apparently.

The article says it's down to bedrock too .. so it ain't gonna get worse then!

It's just a moan against Kannku basically. There is a full example of the lane on youtube from a few years back it was down to bedrock then - it's a slate mining area and the road goes to a quarry so of course theres slate near the surface. Its not got noticeably worse since that video though I don't think.

I've only driven it twice, hence why I didn't remember it more quickly and my recollection was certainly that it was mostly bedrock and slate!

Driven this lane twice and spotted the Kannku up on Grizedale not far from there. Cheeky bugger overtook me when I was having a brew on top of Grizedale, when I got moving and caught up to them, he made all of them pull over into the grass 'off piste' to let me pass! probably making sure I wasn't 'tagging' along for free... little did he know I already had a 8 hour route anyways that cost me £3.40 in the mag I bought!
