L322 Battery problems

My 2004 V8 was having transmission failsafe mode come up on a regular basis, it was diagnosed as low voltage so I bought Lucas AGM battery as advised by the auto electrician, a week later same faults coming up, I have a battery tester that has an AGM setting on it and it was comng up state of charge 78% state of health 36% saying replace battery so i took it back and got a replacement, all was well for a week and today transmission fault came back I checked the battery and state of charge is 79% state of health 40% and it says replace battery, if you charge it the state of charge goes up to 98% but the state of health stays low at around 38%. The car starts fine every time. I did check the battery before fitting it and all was good. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
 
Thanks the CCA is 850 and the tester has a in car and disconnected setting also has before charge and after charge settings you put in the CCA value along with AGM spiral plate or flat plate, hope this helps.
 
How much use does your vehicle have? is it lots of short journeys, long journeys, not used everyday etc etc...

It may be your alternator is not charging the battery, or the short journeys are not allowing enough time for it to be topped up after starting.

I would have to check, but I'm not sure AGM batteries are compatible with your alternator.
 
Yes Saint it's a small island so it's all short distance on work days but I do put it on a trickle charge every Fridaty night and it has cut off by the morning being fully charged, I have been a "big" drive today about 40 miles and checked it on our return, the charge was 98% and state of health 48% and saying replace battery. Datatek it would be very interesting to find out if the battery is compatible as he was not happy to replace it last time.
 
850 cca is small and if your l322 is a vogue trim the charts are often wrong as it takes a higher capacity battery if the battery fits with more than a few mm to spare its to small and i am with Data on the AGM bit they dont list then on euros for that year and engine.

As far as I can see from a quick Google, an AGM battery can stand 14.4 volts short term but not more than 13.8 volts on a regular basis. Your L322 will have a charge voltage of at least 14.8 volts and on some models with a smart alternator 15.5 volts.
Personally I would never fit an AGM battery to a road going car, they have a shorter life expectancy than the Lead/Calcium type the car is supposed to have.
They do seem do have become fashionable, I suspect because they are more profitable.

Get yourself a smart charger if you do not have one and charge at least once a week.
Your car should have at least a 950CCA, 1000CCA if it will fit. Hankook batteries are very good, the last one went for over 8 years until an alternator failure cooked it.
 
Thanks Datatek I do have a smart charger and I will do that, it looks like he has sold me an inferior battery at £200. I will go and see him tomorrow, once again a huge thanks for all your help.

Blimey:eek: You can get a 1000CCA Hankook battery for half that price on line from Battery Megastore but maybe they will not ship to the IOM. Many happy memories of my times on the island for the TT and the Manx GP:D
 
Yes that is the problem over here batteries are classed as dangerous goods and cannot be sent so you have to buy on island and you pay for it big time. That was what brought us over TT and MGP and bought a house on the course we love it here.
