Just charged the battery over night.Started this morning ,ran fine.Went to start an hour latter ,nothing ! Lights are on on dash but glow plug light just flickers and goes out.No response from engine not even a click.

Its either the battery is fooked, or the alternator is fooked. Or both....check the battery with a multimeter and see how much it changes when the engine is running.

Cheers Sirus. Im thinking it must be battery then, I changed the alternator about 18 months ago after the old one sheared a mounting and was pulled onto one of the front pulleys. What a noise !

If its an automatic try starting it in neutral instead of parked .Sorry if i'm being to simple but my auto has an intermittant fault which i put down to the inhibitor switch .Will change one day.
Have you used a battery tester ? garage may help at no cost.
Running volts should be 14 Volts ,stationary about 12.8 is what i have on mine
Good luck

when your charging your battery you put the clips on the outside of the batt terminal which slightly scratches them giving good contact, give your battery terminal a good clean see if that helps, as the alt might not be able to charge the batt back up..

just a thought

i had a similar fault with mine a while ago which i put down to the immobilisor because if i locked the vehicle with the key fob and then un-locked it again it would then start so that may be worth a look. or then again i may be way off but hey its worth a try mate.

Still no joy starting. I got my neighbour to give me a jump start just to see if it would attempt to turn over but nothing ! Lights are on so some power is there.Tried starting in neutral [auto] still nothing.Im thinking it might be starter motor or imobiliser problem?.

Is it an early 300 TDi .If so it may have an "anti theft" device .Located behind and above the front passenger footwell lhs plastic cover. The RAVE CD shows it. It is a black box about 6 inch long .If memory serves i shorted two black wire that go to pins 1 and 2 .I;ll try to find it on the RAVE and post later.
RAVE also suggests it may be the inhibiter switch that has gone open cct .try cleaning the plug .its on the left hand side of the gearbox .
If its a later 300 TDi they have a spider an immobiliser in the dash bd .There is a kit that can be bought called a "Spider" that overcomes a few issues i think ,but as mine has the anti theft have never looked at.I have seen a thread on landy zone though with pictures i think

I went out this afternoon freezing my nuts off ! Took the earth off the battery to body and cleaned it .Took the starter motor earth off the body cleaned that.NOTHIN! Where is this inhibiter switch that might be stuck open ? Sat in front of me wood burner now ,thawing out. :D

ENGINE STARTING PROBLEMS

Below is a summary of what the book says about failure to crank

2. Is automatic transmission inhibitor switch faulty
or gear selection linkage incorrectly adjusted?
YES - See AUTOMATIC GEARBOX, Repair,
Inhibitor Switch,
NO - See Electrical Trouble Shooting

The inhibitor switch is located underneath the car on the left hand side of the automatic gearbox just above the gear linkage kick down cable as shown in RAVE CD .The inhibitor is at the front end of the gearbox with the connector at short distance to the rear.
Note above that the book suggests that the linkage may also be a source of non starting .This is beyond me .
Good luck

The inhibitor switch stops the engine being started in gear (only P and N ) I think it works inconjunction with the "anti theft device "
Just thought i'd make that clear
