right - had The New Baby run through the diagnostic system at work today, just for the sake of it, and it turns out the battery is on its last legs and i need a new 'un (not surprising given the forecourt time it's racked up recently)

now - what's all this i hear about battery changes are best done by dealers, as complete disconnection without a battery pack or something hooked up will seriously discombobulate the alarm/immobiliser set up - do i really need to fetch the thing to an LR garage just to have a new battery fitted - surely Joe Bloggs Motors would be in position to manage such a simple task ?

i know you all hate me, but i really would be very grateful for some guidance on this one

Have you got your radio code? that's all your gonna need...

failing that put one of those jump start booster batteries on the terminal clip cables before disconnecting them and swaping it over

I went to a local battery supplier and they fitted it for me, no extra charge (pardon the pun!) They put a small battery pack over the terminals just to keep the radio code as its not something the previous owner passed on - no need to goto a LR dealer.

if you dont know the radio code try to find out which LR dealer originaly supplied the vehicle. they should have the code on file. you may have to give them some details such as chassis no. etc. to prove that you own it. thats what I did anyway, best of luck.

For my '97 Disco all you need to do to save alarm/radio function is to switch on the ignition, then switch off, then disconnect the battery terminals within 15 seconds.....

Is this not the same with all Discos?

brilliant people - thank you - only thing is, having wandered up to the local ASF this morning, the battery they have listed for my '01 TD5 ES has the terminals in a different place to the existing (original) one, and the bloke reckoned using theirs would put a "kink" in the earth cable, which might be a bit dodgy - so might be stuck with the main dealer after all...

huzzzah ! tracked down a local independent auto electrician who can supply and fit the requisite item (an A C Delco battery, if anyone else ever has cause to ask for one - i'll post up the serial number or whatever it's called later....)

must be going deaf - it was a Delphi/Freedom battery, ref BE 10254N - and it has the terminals in the middle of the two short edges, as it were, rather than in the corners as with most (normal, sensible) batteries

hope this might be of use to someone....

When I bought a replacement battery it had the terminals in a slightly different place and I had the disconnect the earth lead from the body mount to give it some extra length, I then connected a metal strap to the original connection and to the lead itself. There was enough slack on the positive cable for it to stretch.
