Right as I seem to be slowly rebuilding the drive train on my 110 I have started to investigate my next job. Backlash from the rear diff/halfshafts.

I have replaced the A frame ball joint so I ken that's not the issue.

Having driven a 110 wolf on Salisbury plain recently for 3 weeks I got back into my beast and noticed the backlash was horrendous. The wolf had very little. Now reading up on the repair of backlash in the AESP for wolfs (the military repair manual and parts book) it states any more than 10mm of travel at the the diff then replace the diff. Currently I have up to 30mm!:(.

Now I have new Drive flanges to fit, but have any of you replaced the half shafts and cured this fault? Haven spoken to the DSG (civi mechanics employed by the military) they seem to reckon replace half shafts before playing with the diff. Now I have priced up the shafts and prices range from 40 quid to 350 for genuine spares? Anybody used the likes of All makes or Bearmach?

Or have any of you adjusted the diff itself? I found a step buy step guide online but cant find it now?? This may be a bit above my pay grade but haver any of you adjusted the bearings successfully?

Lads and Lassies and help or direction would be greatfully appreciated

Why not remove the shafts first and check for wear?

Dr..evil its on the cards:D,

I'm on orderly officer and thought i'd ask for general opinions. Spent 2 days washing, rubbing it down wea wire brush's then 3 cans of tetra schlutz on the chassis...I've had ma fix of defender love this week!:D.

But come January its getting stripped down!...when the units away in Canada and I get some peace!

are you able to take it into work and get a lad to do it for you lol?

I wouldna trust half the lads in work,:D useless is putting it politely. Think I can work on rovers faster and more successfully than they do. To be fair the MOD change big items and often than not they get sent back through the system for civilian firms to refurb/overhaul.

lol well can you take it to work to use all the tools and ****? that would be nice :D

And yeah i have seen some of the standard of welding on the footwells of my 90 that was done by the MOD  function over form lol

I have all my own tools but the serving bay pit and jacks does come in handy, I aint the smallest guy to squeeze under ma beast. An as i'm the boss I sometimes utilise the workshop. My usual toys I work on are 35 ton 65 ton so i have plenty off space!

I had really bad backlash to the point of making it horrendous to drive. I thought It was a clutch issue until I looked into it.
I replaced all four drive members and it made a MASSIVE improvement. I didn't touch the halfshafts.

Cheers Locky that's the direction i'm heading. I recently had the gearbox replaced and the clutch. So I ken there good, got the flanges to do first....cheapest option first!

Yeah I reckon that will reduce it a lot. By the time a small amount of play at the drive member has gone through the diff the transfer box and the gearbox it equals a lot of movement at the clutch end.
When I was checking what the issue was I had my dad in the landy running it in 1st and reverse with the brakes on and it's only a tiny movement in the drive members but a lot of movement at the props.
I think I reduced mine from about 25mm rotation at the prop to under 10.

I made a big difference to mine by changing the drive flanges. The halfshafts themselves seem to be made out of tougher stuff and don't wear quite as quickly. That got rid of about 80% of the 'clunk' on drive take-up. As said above, since they're quite a small diameter, a tiny bit of movement here can make quite a bit difference in terms of how much rotational slack there seems to be on the propshaft. Land Rovers always seem to have a lot of this. Maybe they don't when they're new, but I've never had a new one. Until the teeth actually start jumping, you just live with it surely?

Mate cheers again, its the direction I'm heading in. You've done what I will when I get a chance in Jan. Gonna pull ma shafts at the same time found some genuine ones on ex-mod and ebay...so may just treat ma sell. As I said I was driving a wolf on Salisbury plain an there was no backlash at all. And I believe that wagon had its diff repaired.. Also if that's your current drive in your avatar very nice machine.

I'd suffered pretty bad backlash since new on my CSW X plate - finally had complete loss of drive on the M5 at 70 outside lane (with 210000 on the clock) and it was a drive flange/half shaft splines. Local indep (at no small cost....) replaced both shafts and flanges and bingo hardly any backlash after all those years/miles.....

I was convinced it was the diff, but as someone said a small bit of play in the flange/splines gives massive rotation on the props ...... ya never know til you try it. Fingers crossed for you. Cheers, A
