I'll av you know i sold my pajero lwb 1995 76,000miles after i bought my rangie... best car ive ever owned, owned it 2 years and it never cost me anything... reliablity compared to most p38's well what can i say :p :D
 
i agree but p38's are getting old now, the stature and looks will fast diminish the same as the classics did :D.. then we'll all av l322s :D:D:D

(must admit tho i bort one cos of the looks lol)
 
S/hand P38 is the best combination of affordability, mile eating, comfort, towing and off road capability you can buy.

The reliabilty isn't that bad if you invest in a bit of diagnostics (Now that the EAS unlock tool is available freely its a nobrainer) to help you along. I do 25,000 miles a year, 30% of which is off road and 5 % is seriously off road. I've owned or driven just about every 4x4 on the market. The only thing that come close to the combination of abilities is the Landcruiser Amazon but they're way too expensive to buy s/hand.
Its the last of the traditional live axle/seperate chassis bar the Patrol which is a dog on the road. Its towing capability is awesome and the air suspension works like a pick-up hitch. The handling, while no X5 is perfectly acceptable for a 4x4.
I'm suspect about the ability of the L322 and Disco 3 to put up with persistent off road abuse in the long term (I hope I'm proven wrong on that cause I really like the Disco)
None of the jap boxes (and I do hold any of the landcruisers in the highest regard, soooooo dependable) can hold a candle to the P38 for character, the pajero being the most soulless in my opinion.
Nice and all as the German offerings are on the road none of them are real off roaders, although a fresh enough turbo diesel G-wagen would tempt me if I could find a RHD one.

So would I go again?
If the wife wouldn't divorce me I'd like nothing better than to get my hands on a genuine low mileage 02 dHSE to keep me going when my 99 blows the top off the engine again :p
 
well i just paid £3000, for a late 1998 v8 4.6
and love it , just got to sort out the oil leak,
just finding it hard to understand the air con controls
overall a rich mans car, now for the working man :)
 
Don't kill yourself on the oil leak, some wise wag here coined the phrase that
"Land Rovers don't so much leak as mark their territory"

Once you've fixed that oil leak, another one will appear. It's the law.

at least you will know the oil is new in the engine, mainly because you have to keep pouring it in the top!!!:doh::doh::doh::doh::doh:

that is soo true, they dont like holding fluid, but again its not a problem so long as you keep an eye on it. i'm gonna do rear crank seal as soon as its gets a bit worse!!!:D:D:D:D:D
 
sorry to here this , mine is leaking from front crank seal, the rear means taking the box out ,i think:doh:

Go back in time? dont need to; I live in the late 80's early 90's......... or that's the way it seems! I've never been able to afford a car newer than a '93 model! So, luckily for me, all the P38 faults were well chronicled before they got even remotely near the sort of price I could afford one!

this engine has been out more times than ive had hot dinners, think its a job that can wait for now!!!


the one to watch is the oil pressure switch, its way above the oilfilter and a bag to get to!!!
