axle replacement time?

I've taken the axle off to blast and clean it.

A few of the brackets have rotten through and/or are really thin

I had to cut the bolts off from the spring retainer plate, so now i need to drill them out as the nut is welded to the underside of the bracket and they won't shift.

The 7 bolts holding on the swivel pin on each end are so rotten, i'm going to have to cut them off. Drilling them out could be an issue?

With all the drilling out of bolts, rotten brackets, and maybe not being able to get the swivel bolts out, is it getting close to replacement axle time?

I've tried to get the axle number, but there is just pitting on the axle where it should be.... how do i know what axle i have?

To be perfectly honest I would say that the chances of saving that casing depend on a lot of work and not a little piece of luck!

RJ LR;s in Sawtry still have some new / crated front axle assemblies for sale, I bought a pair about 3-years ago and didn't regret it.
Fully dressed and ready to go c/w calipers etc (they are even factory filled with oil although common sense says to replace that) they make it an easy afternoon job to go from worn out / rotten to factory fresh.

any pre 300 tdi axle would fit, you could fit a .300 and on but youd need two radius arms too

That is well crusty and the swivel ball is bad,repacement needed I recon.

NE Scotland, so not even good for the second hand market! What sort of price was a new fully set up axle? Is RJ just a distributer of LRs?

I have the wide Radius arms. Are the post .300 the narrow radius arms, or are they different?

its just the width, pre 300 on a defender are narrow ,all d1s are wide like 300 defender on

I have a G reg 90. It has the thick radius arms. So that would suggest the axle has been changed already?
The rear axle is disc brakes and i have a 300tdi engine, so perhaps the put on both axles and the engine from a donor car?

its got earlier than 300 defender swivel housings etc so maybe just the case is later

Ok, thanks.

I will need to see what i can find in the way of a replacement. If its easier / cheaper to keep this one, i'll need to change the swivels etc. But how do i know what kit number to buy if i don't have an axle number and parts have maybe been changed as you have noted?

Just a thought.... Where is the width measurement taken on the radius arms?
From what I've seen, there is a 47mm of 54mm radius arm? I have measured my ones.... the depth of where the bush goes in is around 37mm. The width of the arm between is around 30mm.

So clearly i'm missing something here! Where should I measure?

Where abouts in Scotland are you? I've got a front axle that I took of my 200Tdi. I was going to fully refurb it but haven't had the time yet. I replaced both wheel bearings, rebuilt both swivels(1 New ball) and new discs and pads whilst was on the Landy probably only done 1000miles before I swapped it.
