Looking to buy P38 as second car and for towing purposes.Would need to be automatic. Does the forum recommend diesel or lpg converted V8??

Morning,
I've towed with my 4.6HSE for 6 years. Very good tow car. I also towed with a 3.0 Omega estate-the difference in MPG towing between the two was about 1-2mpg. The Range Rover does about 17mpg towing. Plenty of power amd more importantly weight. I did have an issue with stability initially but this turned out to be the car tyres. I changed them and it's as steady as a rock towing.

Diesel all the way, 22mpg towing my caravan with mine, 24mpg long term average, up to 30mpg on a run without the caravan, plus they don't drop liners. Can be run on biodiesel making them very cheap to run.

Agree 100%

and running on home made fuel I'm currently at 33 mpg over the last 1000 miles!!

I tow a van with a 4.6 on L P G. Get equivalent of around 20 mpg. Lots of power and never gets hot. And v8 p38s are cheaper than diesel ones even on L p g

I have tried both with the same twin axle bailey senator caravan over the years. Had a 2.5 diesel with the BMW turbo version for a couple of years, it towed but always struggled on long hills often overheating on a hot day. The vehicle was well maintained and ran perfectly well when not towing. I now have a 4.6 V8 running on LPG which tows the caravan considerably better. I also tow a large twin axle trailer which can weigh 3 tons at times, the 4.6 pulls it very well. At 56mph I get 17mpg towing the caravan, and there is the saving on the cost of LPG. I don't remember getting more than about 22mpg with the diesel when towing, so for me, with my caravan, the V8 petrol is cheaper to tow with, but the extra power does it for me.
