Hi folks :) i have to chose from manual to automatic gearbox from an old classic 1989 300tdi... Which is better for off road and on road... It will be a second car and will be general used for off road....

Auto.

No loss of torque at the road wheels during a change, ideal in almost every situation where constant traction is important.

The only downside to an auto is it can be difficult to perform those fine "back 6 inches" type manoeuvres, in the rough as there is no clutch to slip in a controlled manner it can be a case of drive or no drive with a lack of finesse

Easy in low range even with the caravan on the back.

Auto for me, even during the 'creep' situation mentioned you can always apply slight pressure on the brake pedal with your left foot. Only downside is lack (compared to a manual) of engine braking during steep descents, although I am only familiar with petrol engines - perhaps a diesel is better ?

Use the gear lever and engine braking is fine.
