Disco 2 Auto Transmission fault code

Hi my daughters Automatic Disco 2 TD5 when you press the accelerator and go into kickdown it like the car is surging you can feel and hear the revs build then die down but doesn’t pick up any speed it’s especially noticeable on hills at lower speeds it does it without being in kick down on steep hills. I plugged the Hawkeye in and have this fault code from the transmission

What does the fault code mean where do I start looking to fix the issue she’s having?

First of all prompt as to go to the next page on hawkeye to see the whole message what's after ''NOT''... also clear that code then after the symptom occurs read again cos as long as the M+S warnings are not flashing that code is hystorical
 
I've only seen that code triggered for loose/corroded battery connections and/or a low voltage battery.
Is that fault code (P1884 33) the only one that you are getting? Has there been other maintenance done to the Disco?

It’s not a historical code I clear it and it comes back especially if car has been driven up a long hill and tried to accelerate.

This is what it says as I scroll down. The M&S lights aren’t flashing. This message appears after the surging (like clutch slipping) has happened if It’s driven around town without big hills then it doesn’t appear but once you take it say to where my parents live which has steep fast road hills to get there you feel it and when stop this is the message

Yeah it’s the only code I’m getting the battery is brand new. It’s had gearbox oil and filter changed(no difference) front brakes replace with new callipers as one was seized, the drivers wheel bearing,steering ball joints and cv replaced as all worn for MOT.
 
Next time I’m in her Discovery I’ll try and do a video to show what I mean by the surging/slipping I’m not sure if I’m describing it correctly it’s a weird one.

When I first got the Hawkeye there was all sorts off old fault codes and I deleted them all this is only one that keeps coming back and only after going up hill whilst trying to accelerate
 
The wheels are standard dimension or bigger?... anyway in this particular case hawkeye might not be the best tool cos a nanocom would be the best to record a live data log as to see all the readings when the symptom occurs, that fault code is generated on the CAN when the calculated torque by the engine ECU is out of the range expected by the autobox ECU though no code in the engine ECU can lead to a fuelling issue

is it 10P or 15+P engine?

It’s a 15P the wheels and tyres are standard 255/65r16 I’ll need to ask about see if someone can loan me a nanocom. Could the MAF sensor be faulty? Been googling all day and seems to be a million different things but can’t find a Definitive answer :( Could the torque converter be on way out?
 
To rule out the MAF unplug it and drive it so...if the symptom goes away then that's it, to rule out an autobox fault run a stall test on it and see the result, according to the fault code you should get the "reduced engine power" thing

Cheers @sierrafery I'll give that a go sometime this week unfortunately I'm going be mostly busy with my 90's gearbox which went on Saturday and sounds like the Layshaft is away :( If it wasn't for bad luck i'd have no luck at all :eek:

I'll get back to you once i've done the stall test and tried it with MAF disconnected.
 
@TorsionBhudda How did you end up solving the issue? I am experiencing a very similar issue (P1884-33) and it occurs only when going on steep hills. I checked the MAF sensor with a voltage meter without driving the car, shows proper readings. Will try to drive it without the MAF connected. However I think it's a different issue.

Would be keen to learn what your root cause was!

That's a hazardous conclusion cos it's impossible to know if the MAF has proper readings or not based on voltage measurement with stationary vehicle, all you can conclude is that it has outputs so not completely fubar, the ony correct way to diagnose this is to record a live data log to see what happens when the symptom occurs

The turbo specialist concluded its the electronic waste gate valve. We have a replacement unit in tomorrow. Meanwhile I drove around with the MAF disconnected and the problem still occurred.

Let’s see what the new valve will do.
