Auto only goes in first and reverse

Hi

My 2.5dse has lost all gears except 1st and reverse. I can go from high to low range but the only gears I can select are first and reverse. If I put her in 3rd then she justs rolls back.

If I need to change the auto box what type do I need are the gearboxes the same for the diesel as the petrol.?

The diseasel uses the same ZF 4HP22 as the 4.0, which is a different box from that in the 4.6. I don't know about the bellhousing, or if the torque converter from a 4.0 will fit the diesel though, so be careful.

The gearbox itself isn't very heavy - unless the transfer box is attached, so if you're planning on doing the job yourself, make sure you split them before you kill yourself trying to get them out. DAMHIK,IJD,OK?

Also, if you put it into low ratio and press the sport / manual button, can you select 3rd or 4th then?
 
Just on the off chance, try draining the fluid and cleaning out the filter underneath the box. If this is clogged up it will cause drive problems. Cheapest and easiest solution first?
 
Hello,

The gear box its self isnt very heavy but the torque convertor is when in place. I have just fitted a 2nd hand box in my P38a 4.6 HSE, I would recomend taking the transfer box frist which quite easy, then take the box out.

Hi Guys thanks for the responses. I,m glad to hear this is not too heavy. Can the change be done with the car on the ground or does it need to be lifted. I have a single set of wheel ramps that I could drive it on. I.e front or back.

I have not tried manual selection in the low box will try that when I return home later in the week.

When this first happened I could not use switch at all. Yesterday however all seemed ok in terms of going from high to low and back only still just get 1st gear.
 
Is there any one who can confirm what gearbox will fit this. My local land rover salvage say that the diesel auto is different from the petrol but pete-m earlier in this tread says

So can any one shed any more light on this.

I suspect it might be a good idea to ring Ashcroft Transmissions.

If your LR specialist says they're different, I'd say they're probably right, but the ratios, etc are identical between the 4.0 and 2.5, and they both use the 4HP22.
