Hi everyone, I'm new here and I'm looking for some advise.

I've recently bought my first range rover and I'm having some trouble with the auto box and I was hoping someone here might be able to help.

The problem is I can't select 3 2 or 1 manually the selector will not go any lower than D. I don't want to really force it incase I break something expensive and I'm not sore what to do. The car changes up and down all the gears fine in D, I just can't manually select anything lower.

I was going to try a fluid and filter change to see of that solves it but before I did I thought I'd find out of anyone new anything that might be causing the problem as auto gearboxes are a mystery to me.

Many thanks

Matt

As above, the cable is known to bind up...

When replacing it needs to be set just-so to ensure it is correct.

Download the RAVE manuals (there is a link in Wammers Compressor How To in the How To section at the top of the Forum) and read up on your new friend.....cos that is what you are gonna have to be with it!!

Thanks for the replys. I thought it was the cable too which is why I wasn't bothered about it but I've undone the cable from the gearbox and it moves freely. I know the xyz sensor is playing up so is there a chance it's broken and not letting the shaft on the gearbox rotate? or am I kidding myself and I've bought a bit of a lemon with a doggy gearbox?

How do you know the XYX sensor is playing up?

The lights on the gear change don't alway line up with what I've selected you have to jiggle the stick to get the xyz sensor to pick up what you've selected. I'm assuming there's a series of switches inside it I wondered if part of it has broken it could be jamming the selection?

The XYZ switch has a plastic wiper quadrant that fits on the shaft and contacts pips as it is moved, possibly just needs a clean and adjust.
