Auto Gearbox...reassurance needed.

In ausgust I paid £2500 to have the auto box repaired/reconditioned. Has been running fine since.
This morning on my way to work I stopped to pick up my newspaper : back into the vehicle : watching mirror for traffic to pull out : I may have missed a gear i.e. I may have been in neutral when I revved to pull out. No drive. ( revving may have taken it up to or above 3000rpm.)
Panic. Went through the gears : got drive in 3. Drove on...worrying.
Stopped at lights couple of miles further on : went to pull away : no drive...panic : through the gears : got drive in (?)3 : drove on to work.
Stopped vehicle : message " Gearbox Fault."
Worried all day !
Came down 4ish
Started : no error message : drove home (50 miles): no probs : behaved impeccably.

I assume I induced a fault by the high revving which drove fluid from the appropriate places to where it shouldn't be : I assume sitting all day fluid drained back and all is well.
Somebody who knows what he's talking about please tell me I don't have a prob !
If I do I want to get back to the recon experts before my guarantee runs out !

I'd check the oil level, it should not behave like that.:eek:
Gearbox fault puts it into failure mode with just 3rd gear if I remember correctly.

However, I have just fitted a new auto gearbox myself and had a few error messages with the previous old box.

This is what happened to me: I accelerated flat out from the lights, 1st, 2nd, just into 3rd gear, when this little upstart pulled across in front of me, I hit the brakes then almost immediately floored it to overtake him. It kicked down to 2nd and beep, beep, gearbox fault. It went into limp home mode ie locked in 3rd. :eek:

It was a soft fault that cleared later by ignition off/on. I put it on Faultmate and the fault recorded said input speed sensor fault or something like that. Experts on the Blackbox forum could not help much.

Here is what I think: If there is a mismatch between the gearbox input and output shaft speeds to what it expects ie something is slipping a lot, then it registers a fault to protect the gearbox from damage.

I think that your engine was still revving in neutral when you banged it in gear. There was momentary period when there was a mismatch in the speeds. Nothing to worry about I think :)

Thanks dave : I'll check the levels as suggested by Datatek but would be surprised if levels are below acceptable. Your diagnosis would fit the facts :I did not turn off after fault logged. On next turn on later in the day it had cleared.
 
I'm a bit puzzled to this revving in Neutral, when you take your car for a mot and the car is warmed up how do they test the emissions ?? Put it it nuetral and rev it .
 
I don't think revving the engine in neutral is the issue. I think it is revving it up and putting it into drive at high revs. I would guess the clutch packs would slip giving a fault message.

Except that mine will rev to 5k rpm on the shift from 2nd to 3rd if I let it, which gives a massive mismatch between input and output but it has never logged a single fault.
 
I had a huge mismatch a while back when I got water where it shouldn't go, this caused the engine to cut out while doing 60MPH, I put it in neutral and refired as quickly as possible then stuck it in drive. She nosedived a bit but the only fault was traction control went a bit spastic and the ABS light came on. I wasn't far from home so coasted home, shut her off, left it to dry over night and next morning the faults were gone.

If that doesn't set off a speed mismatch fault I don't know what will. Perhaps something else is getting a bit rare causing the problems?

Take it back and tell them about it. Get them to check it out. Even if the warranty runs out, an ongoing fault notified before the warranty period expires must still be covered until rectified.

Just ongoing report : I think I reported that journey home on the day of the fault was faultless .
Despite events I took her back out again today for a round trip of 100 miles or so.
Behaved impeccably in both directions ! :D
