Hello All,

I have a 1998MY 4.6 V8 auto.

Does this car use any safety interlocks for the auto gearbox?

I can select any gear with my lever without using the button on the lever. Even from drive to reverse. I can get it out of park without having to press the brake pedal too.

I know LR made it different for different markets, but I suspect mine is either worn or broken.

The only other P38 I can check against is a manual so I thought I'd ask on here.

In standard UK trim, what do you have to do to get out of park and change gears?

Also, I don't seem to be able to select 1. The lever will go to the 1 position, but the dash display just shows 2. I suspect my xyz switch for this, but if my selector gate is not working properly then I suppose this could be the cause of that too?

You have to lift the lever under the gearknob to go from park to reverse, same for neutral to reverse or drive and vice versa, free movement between drive and 3, lift lever to go to 2 or 1.
Failure to select 1 is usually a cable adjustment.

Cheers Data,

Looks like I need to replace the selector gate thing then.

The movement is a bit worn feeling and slushy.

It doesn't really snap in to position crisply like I would expect.

Sandy,

Not difficult no.

I've had the car 18 months, and it's always been the same.

It's not hard to move, but there is not definite click in to (any) position on the gearstick.

Slushy would be the best description.

I expect there's some sort of sprung loaded latch mechanism to stop the lever at every point in the selector. Mine feels like the spring has sprung, or the mechanism is worn so it doesn't really click in any position.

They're pretty cheap to buy on the 'bay, I might just get one to have look at and swap it out.

To be honest I always thought it wasn't right, just had other things to deal with first! I'd rather it worked properly, it hasn't happened yet, but it can only be a matter of time before my kids change gear for me whist in motion!

The ECU will stop it selecting the wrong gear for the speed but beware reverse.
A slushy feel is likely to be the cable partially seized.

Right, I'll have a look at the weekend.

How hard s it going to be to run some oil down the cable? Sounds like it could be fun...

I think that bit was for the US market, along with it having to be in P to remove the ignition key

My Jag had it, and being nearly the same company I thought it might have been carried over.

I clearly need to get it fixed. A day under the beast looms!
